Vinous (86-88)

The 2019 Monthélie Clos Les Champs Fulliot 1er Cru comes from 0.9 hectares of vine. It was the second parcel to be picked because of its warm microclimate, yet I find more precision on the Les Duresses. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of dark chocolate and tar. There is more elegance and terroir expression on the Les Duresses this year.

Vinous (98)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose, although it is nothing to get too worried about. I think it has exceptional mineralité covered up by its youth. The medium-bodied palate is taut, fresh and quite saline, with a fine bead of acidity and some vanilla-y oak toward the very saline finish, though that will be eaten with bottle age. There is outstanding precision on the aftertaste, and that seems to be accentuated with aeration. I gave this a tepid reaction from barrel, but here in bottle, it received my highest score out of over two hundred 2017s. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is exceedingly pure on the nose, offering black cherries, bergamot and touches of pomegranate and wonderful mineralité; it’s actually not unlike the Chapelle-Chambertin from Dugat in style. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins. Not a voluptuous Chapelle-Chambertin, but full of nervosité, with a lightly spiced and very persistent finish. Superb.

Jancis Robinson (17)

Cask sample. Pale blueish crimson. Lively and racy with real lift, though a tad rawer than the Clos des Epeneaux. A very serious Côte de Beaune by any measure.

Vinous (92)

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90)

Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet is immediately present, some fresh herbs as much as flowers, fresh apple too, this is quite austere up front, but with much more weight behind waiting to emerge. This is looking backward at the moment, but I expect it to blossom in the bottle. Tasted: November 2021

Burghound (96)

Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

Around 65 year old vines. Deep purple. The bouquet shows an explosion of ripe deep raspberry fruit. Reaching for fruit freshness and a little gourmandise and all that has arrived quite naturally in 2020. I’ll have a magnum of this whenever you want! Seamless and with supple tannins. Tasted: October 2021

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, the first Grand Cru to be picked with 50% whole clusters, has a fragrant, pure and (unlike Latricières) inviting bouquet that just wants to seduce. Very sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame the crystalline red fruit, supreme mineralité with one of the most elegant finishes you will find in this vintage. Reminiscent of Dugat's Chapelle-Chambertin, this is divine.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

5 Star Wine. Louis considers that Latricières-Chambertin is typically three degrees cooler than neighbouring Combottes. 40% whole bunch vinification. Glowing purple. A touch of reduction on the nose but a vibrant luxurious fruit nonetheless. There is a gorgeous coating of a deep dark velvet fruit with the structure behind perfectly poised, refined tannins and clean acidity. Very long. A gorgeous wine in the making. Louis feels that 2020 lost the plot of Latricières – but not at all 2021.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

The first vintage of this 1859 cuvée was 2019. The name refers to when Louis Trapet arrived in Gevrey and bought En Derée and Champerriers. The soils include a lot of silica and drains well. There is very good genetic material here too, replanted after phylloxera and before 1st World War. A lively fresh purple colour. Splendid raspberry and fresh plum fruit with excellent acidity. Startlingly fine. Drink from 2026-2033.
