Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95-97)

Another in a string of top vintages, Beaucastel's 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape was produced from Grenache yields of only eight hectoliters per hectare (normal is about 28 hectoliters per hectare, according to Marc Perrin). The final blend I was shown is almost candied in its fruity intensity of raspberries and cherries, yet it has a potent underpinning of more savory elements, like tapenade, grilled meat and dried spices. Full-bodied, with fine, silky tannins, this shows tremendous length, reverberating with hints of crushed stone on the finish.

As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes comes from a three-hectare parcel planted in 1909. It's richer, creamier and longer than Beaucastel's regular white Châteauneuf-du-Pape but also fresher and brinier. It looks even more impressive than the stunning 2016.

Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was bottled just two weeks before my visit, hence the plus sign attached to its rating. Planted just outside the boundaries of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the vines here average 80 years old. Mouthwatering aromas of red fruit and spice lead the way, backed by a full-bodied wine that's creamy and lush but also silky and vibrant. As always, it's one of the best Côtes du Rhône wines from a given vintage.

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

Moving to the old vine cuvée, which is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes reveals a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a richer, slightly more powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, jammy black cherries, roasted garrigue, black licorice, and assorted background notes of spicy meatiness. It’s full-bodied and has a beautiful mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. This is another classic yet ripe, pure, and beautifully balanced wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15+ years or more.

Since I reviewed the 2019 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc last year (98+), I had some doubts about spending the time to re-review it. But one taste had me transfixed. Hints of crushed stone and subtle oak appear on the nose, backed by waves of honeyed pear and pineapple, plus enough invigorating citrus to provide a sense of freshness. Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

The 2019 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from the Bessards lieu-dit, which is just to the west of the Le Méal, but the soils are drastically different, with the Bessards being pure broken granite soils, and in this reviewers opinion, the best terroir in the world for Syrah. Thrilling crème de cassis, gunflint, acacia flowers, violets, and spicy nuances give way to a full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant Hermitage that has incredible class in its tannins, flawless balance, and the depth and length to evolve for 30+ years.

Emmanuel Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chenes 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

I tasted four components of the 2018 Crozes Hermitage Les Trois Chênes, rating them all within this range, whether from tank (20% of the blend) or barrel. Taken together, they're more dark fruited and plummy than some years, with ripe, supple tannins and ample concentration, but they retain a sense of vitality and freshness. Exciting potential, for sure. When I visited Emmanuel Darnaud this year, he remained steadily upbeat, despite the hailstorms that ravaged his (and others') Crozes-Hermitage vineyards earlier in the season. "The hail came at a 'good' time," he said. "We lost this year's crop, but it allowed the vines to set new leaves and recover." He didn't think it would have a major impact on 2020. For 2017 and 2018, Darnaud said it was important not to pick too late, to keep temperatures down during fermentation, and to extract gently to retain finesse in the wines. He's experimenting more and more with whole-cluster fermentations and likes the results so far. "I'm not ready to say it should all be whole cluster, but it can add some freshness and finesse," he said. Personally, I was blown away by the aromatics and texture shown by the 100% whole-cluster trials that he offered for tasting. While known predominantly for his outstanding red wines, fans of Marsanne should make the effort to track down Darnaud's limited production (three barrels each) of white Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. There likely won't be much Darnaud wine from the 2019 vintage, so buy the wines while you can.

Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 2019 (6x75cl)

Matthew Jukes (20++)

Like La Maison Bleue, La Chapelle barely moved an inch over the five days that it sat open (and gradually oxidising) on my tasting bench. This is a monumental wine with the finest Syrah nose I have seen since the ethereal and intriguing beauty of the remarkable 2016 vintage and also the monolithic stance of the legendary 1990. However, this is not to say that this vintage can be directly compared to either year. There is a latent power about this wine that is as elusive as it is impressive. This solaire vintage has certainly given La Chapelle a sense of foreboding power and yet there is so much grace here, too. You could be sniffing a handful of granite and gravel, a bouquet of freshly picked herbs, a mortar of freshly ground pepper or a punnet of juicy black fruit and yet there is so much more to discover here. What I find so remarkable about this wine is that it does not show any trace of over-ripeness nor does it have any unwanted oiliness or excessive alcohol. In spite of its richness and depth, this is a pristinely refreshing wine with crunch and crackle of filigree tannin which enlivens every sip. In this regard, it is a far less obvious superstar than the preening 1990 and it is a more erudite and statuesque model than the esoteric 2016. In short, this is one of only a handful of vintages of La Chapelle to which I have awarded a perfect score and who is to say that this will not happen again before too long? The care and attention in this entire portfolio of wines are evident and the hard work and holistic approach are not only paying off in the vineyards but also in the glass, too, and this makes 2019 another phenomenally successful vintage for Jaboulet.

Saint Damien Gigondas La Louisiane 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2019 Gigondas La Louisiane hails from a south-facing slope of clay and sand and is a blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah and Cinsault, all aged in foudre. Loaded with black cherries and mixed berries, it's a big, full-bodied effort that drinks surprisingly well already yet has the concentration, length and structure that should enable it to age another 15 years or more.

Telmo Rodriguez As Caborcas 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96+)

I was really looking forward to the 2018 As Caborcas, a multi-grape red produced with Mencía, Merenzao, Sousón, Garnacha, Godello, Brencellao and other grapes from ancient vines on granite terraces. It fermented in small oak and stainless steel vats and had a soft élevage in 1,500- and 2,000-liter foudres to preserve its Atlantic profile. This is a little more reticent than Falcoeira but more open than O Diviso, but the three showed superbly in 2018. It takes some time in the glass to unfurl the As Caborcas perfume—decayed blue flowers, wild and Atlantic, berries and herbs, subtle and elegant. Simply superb. 2,460 bottles were filled in June 2020.
