De Trafford Elevation 393 2008 (6x75cl)
Dark earth, roasted plum, singed cedar and coffee notes form the frame of this old-school Cabernet, with bay, tobacco, mulled currant, mint and steeped blackberry fruit at the core. The long finish lets the savory notes play out beautifully. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc.
The 2008 Elevation 393 is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Shiraz and 5% Cabernet Franc that comes from the Mont Fleur vineyard. It is destemmed and raised in new French oak for 20 months. It has a smoky, almost hickory-scented bouquet that is well-defined and nicely controlled – a cool customer you might say. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins: taut blackberry and raspberry fruit with a linear, focused finish that suggests this will age with style. This is very assured.

(a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz and cabernet franc): Bright, dark red. Currant, minerals, truffle and smoky oak on the nose, with hints of coffee and game. Sweet and lush but cool, with intense, youthfully medicinal black cherry and mint flavors framed by well-integrated acidity and complicated by saline minerality. The long, rising, gripping finish shows the flinty, saline syrah component, which comprises 20% of the blend, along with notes of chocolate and herbs. Tannins are broad and sweet. A very successful blend.

The De Trafford wine estate is the source for some of South Africa's most well-made wines. Quality here is driven by the experimental attitude of trained architect-turned-winemaker David Trafford. The wine-making style is based entirely upon the potential of the vine and the fruit itself. Minimal intervention in the cellar and the gentlest of touches allow the wine to develop at its own pace and develop a true sense of place and terroir-driven expression.
