Savory herbs, mint, bright red berries, spices, iron, crushed rocks and autumn leaves are some of the notes that grace the palate in the 2011 Corton. The 2011 is beautifully centered, with underlying veins of acidity and minerality that run through its core. At the same time, the precocious vintage has yielded a Corton that is unusually supple and tender in its youth. This is a model of pure class. The gentle, enveloping finish gives the 2011 much of its early appeal.

Deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of black cherry, mocha, nut oil, smoked meat and earth. Silky and fine-grained, with impressive density to its dark fruit, earth and game flavors. Finishes with very fine tannins and superb length. May be the best vintage yet for this old-vine grand cru blend (DRC signed a long-term lease agreement in 2008 with the Domaine Prince Florent de Merode covering vines in Corton Clos du Roi, Bressandes and Renard). The 2010 is more high-pitched and ethereal, while this is earthier and denser. I may even be underrating this wine today.

The 2011 Corton Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti put in a similar showing as it did just after bottling earlier last year. It has less of the mushroom element than I recollect, adorned with pastille-like purity of red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, a slight ferrous note developing with time in the glass. The palate has developed a tad more roundness in the mouth in recent months, the tannins softened a little and it is consequently less masculine and more approachable. That said, as much as I enjoyed polishing off my glass, I would advise allowing this several years in bottle so that it can lose its puppy fat.
