Domaine des Heritiers Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)
On the slope that descends from La Montagne, one of the highest elevations in the Côte d’Or, Aloxe-Corton, Pernard- Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny converge. Their Grand Cru vineyards wrap roughly 240 degrees around the hill. The Grand Cru of Le Charlemagne covers 17 hectares stretching from near the summit to mid-slope and is among the five vineyards of the commune in which the variegated chalk and iron rich marl soils yield both Corton and Corton-Charlemagne.
Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot owns an exceptional 2 hectare south-facing plot acquired in 1914. It yields a benchmark Corton-Charlemagne for which Louis Jadot is famous.
A wine of elegance and depth, its aristocratic bouquet and luscious full-fruit complexity are complemented by nuances of honey, cinnamon and oak, with an intense, lasting finish.
Aromas of confit citrus, crisp orchard fruit and mint mingle with hints of petrol and toasted bread in an incipiently complex bouquet, introducing the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, multidimensional and muscular wine built around serious reserves of structuring dry extract and girdled by lively acids. Long and chalky, this is very promising.

From a domaine-owned plot facing due south in Les Pougets, purchased by the Jadot family in the 19th century. Somewhat closed initially, but opening with a bit of time to show a ripe pear fruit character, with hints of beeswax and fresh hay. On the palate, the wine is rich and substantial, with balanced acidity that reflects the southern exposition. With time this should open well, for there is a lot of potential here.

Cask sample. Correct, not overripe, tight, actually pretty tense, reined-in fruit. But it’s a fairly middle-of-the-road interpretation that I’m sure sells wonderfully well in developing markets but is not going to set the world on fire.
