A smaller but outstanding vintage, the aromatics have a little more thyme and rosemary than usual in 2019 giving this Reserva more of a 'Mediterranean twist' (TA). The fruit purity shines through on the 'dense and concentrated' (TA) palate, and the delicate freshness, a major characteristic of all of the wines of this estate, is there for all to see.
A wine that offers ridiculous value for money for its old-vine, high-altitude elegance at a far more accessible price than Águila's top releases, it is easy to see why the Reserva has become a staple for many..
Part of Águila's magic is their old-vine field blend. With around 95% of this Reserva 2019 made from Tempranillo (called Fino Tinto locally in Ribera), the rest is made up of an amazing mix of other varieties, some even unknown to Águila, that were interplanted in the vineyards over 100 years ago. Jorge wanted to honour these historic, gnarled vines, rather than ripping them up, by including their fruit in his wines. Thankfully, he was right to do so because they add a uniqueness of personality that one would struggle to find anywhere else in the Ribera - proven by many of the top producers in the region asking to buy grapes from him Águila vintage.
2019 was a warm and dry low-yielding year, somewhat similar to 2015, and the 2019 Reserva could be the modern version of the 2015—a round, lush and approachable Reserva that is perfumed and fruit-driven, with spices in the background. It's a hedonist cuvée of 95% Tempranillo and 5% other grapes from some of the oldest grapes in the village. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts followed by a slow malolactic in 228-liter French oak barrels, mostly used, where the wine matured for 35 months. It reveals very good integration of the oak that is neatly folded into the wine. It shows the tannic structure of the 2019 vintage. 23,875 bottles and 430 magnums produced. It was bottled in September 2022.

Jorge Monzón's Reserva bottling makes full use of 20 different parcels of 100 year plus vineyards in his home village of La Aguilera. Partnering Tinto Fino with 5% of other grapes, it's rich, dense and concentrated, with thyme and rosemary aromas that give it a Mediterranean twist, bold tannins and notes of garrigue, iodine and black fig.
