Figeac 2020 received glowing praise across the board again this year. Awarding 96-98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown was greeted by “fresh black cherries, juicy black plums and ripe blackcurrants” complemented by “a whole array of floral and spice notes”, and concluded that it is:

“Far more cerebral and quietly introspective than it is hedonic, this could only be Figeac.”

Jeb Dunnuck (96-98 points) found “everything you could want from this site”, including “gorgeous notes of cassis, tobacco, sappy herbs, and spring flowers as well as an almost Pauillac lead pencil note that develops with time in the glass”. Mirroring the most exceptional wines, the Figeac 2020 “brings ample power yet has a weightless elegance and riveting precision reminiscent of the 2016”.

“Don't miss it” – says Jeb Dunnuck

About Château Figeac

Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) dates back to second-century Gallo-Roman origins; Undoubtedly one of the greatest producers and terroirs of the Saint-Émilion appellation, if not the whole of Bordeaux. Mentioned by experts in the same breath as Ausone and Cheval Blanc.

Viniculture

Once the largest property in the appellation, many plots were sold over the years to create and enlarge properties like neighbouring Château Cheval Blanc and even Pomerol’s La Conseillante. Figeac has excellent terroir, and after the estate was not awarded Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in 2012 there was renewed determination to put the property back to its rightful place at the top of Saint-émilion. Michel Rolland was hired to consult and Frederic Faye was appointed to oversee wine-making. The result has been a dramatic upturn in quality and critical acclaim.

Figeac is unusual in Saint-Émilion is being situated on gravelly soils. This means a much higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes here. The wine itself is particularly unique, and buyers may come across a number of allusions to this - "lively and very "Figeac". A higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, as opposed to the very Merlot dominant Ausone and Cheval Blanc, Figeac, is a cerebral balance of Left-Bank perfumed mint, cedar and cassis, with the wonderfully lush cashmere texture and fruit of Merlot.
