The 2018 Jean Faure is a vintage that I had tasted just a few weeks earlier as part of my vintage report, but I expressed reservations, and so I did not mind re-tasting another example so soon afterward. This was better and, I hope, more representative. It has a similar nose, light but better-defined than the previous bottles, with graphite-tinged black fruit. The main difference is that there is no green trait on the palate. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin and touches of prune, white pepper and sage. Missing some tension on the finish, but otherwise this is drinking well. It has more definition and vivacity than the 2011, offering black fruit, tobacco and graphite notes; the Cabernet is clearly in the driver’s seat while Merlot gives directions. The ripe palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is perhaps the most modern in style of all the Cuvée Jean Gautreaus that I have tasted, yet there is panache here, and it feels long and tender in the mouth.
