Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (90)

Fresher, deeper red. Much more complex aromas of black cherry, raspberry, leather, game, herbs and spices. Suave, silky and concentrated; fresher than the Clos de la Roche thanks to harmonious acids. Really seamless texture. Finishes with well-buffered tannins, very good grip and strong fruit.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Medium red-ruby. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of red berries, spices and minerals. Dense, silky and sweet; a bit more harmonious, complex and perfumed at this early stage than the Clos de la Roche. Finishes with ripe tannins, plenty of verve and sneaky persistence.

Medium cherry-red. Deep, complex, expressive aromas of red fruits, smoke, earth and underbrush. Sweet, fat and smooth but with a medicinal reserve to its black cherry and mineral flavors. Conveys a strong impression of saline soil tones. The Clos de la Roche seems riper but this is more minerally and taut.

The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot.

(30% new oak): Good medium red. Pure, restrained aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then juicy and tighter in the middle, showing strong calcaire energy as the mother rock here isn't much more than a foot below the surface. This rich, firmly tannic wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring black fruits and violet. Impeccably balanced from the start, but this youthfully austere wine will need time in the cellar. The estate is slowly replanting this vineyard, so this 2016 is a mix of old and young vines.

The 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a pixelated bouquet that really expresses the limestone soils of this vineyard: subtle pressed iris scents infuse the red berry fruit, all with brilliant delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, again, a little spicy (the leitmotif throughout the Rousseau range) with impressive grip and persistence on the finish. Excellent.

Good deep, bright red. Urgent aromas of crushed dark fruits and white pepper; brilliantly delineated but extremely unevolved. Then wonderfully juicy and bright in the mouth, with complex mocha and game hints adding interest to the concentrated, sappy berry flavors. Dense, classically dry and thoroughly ripe grand cru that's still a bit closed in on itself. The very long, slow-mounting finish features substantial suave tannins and terrific underlying structure. This should evolve in bottle for at least a couple of decades.

The 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin was cropped at just 27hl/ha. Now with 21 years on the clock, atypical for this vintage, it has a sensual bouquet with scents of red fruit, cassis, quince and violet, though with continued aeration it develops a subtle earthiness. The palate is marked by very fine tannin, well judged acidity and quite a structured second half. This is still quite backward, but there is something very stylish here and for those with extraordinary patience it may well blossom...eventually! Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2005 Ruchottes-Chambertin is the highlight of recent vintages. It has a brilliant nose that is endowed with astonishing precision, far more than previous vintages with mineral-rich cassis and red cherry fruit, later a hint of oyster shell. Crystalline is the word that springs to mind. The palate is symmetrical in terms of its balance, armed with filigree tannin, show-stopping purity and a satin-like finish that takes your breath away. Is there a touch of stem addition on the end? I don't care. This is a gold-plated fabulous wine. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin was 100% de-stemmed. It has a gorgeous bouquet with vivid scents of plush red cherry fruit, cassis, violets and a hint of vanilla remaining from some new oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant, precise opening. It is embroidered with a perfect thread of acidity and gains momentum towards the finish that feels plush and sensual (not a million miles away from the 1999 stylistically). It needs three or four more years in bottle but there is great potential here. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is pure silk on the palate. Freshly cut roses, raspberries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. In 2010, the Ruchottes is rich, yet weightless, in the way only Burgundy can be. All the elements are beautifully woven together in this totally gracious, striking wine. This parcel is over 60 years old. The Mugneret sisters aren't in favor of using the Vieilles Vignes designation for the wines, as that term has no formal definition. The old vines go into Ruchottes, the young vines into the 1er Cru.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Despite some reduction, there is clearly plenty of attractive ripe red berry fruit on the nose of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Ruchottes-Chambertin 2011: cranberry, wild strawberry and touches of blueberry. The palate is less masculine and reserved compared to when I tasted it at the domaine at the end of 2013. Here it feels more velvety on the entry. It has a cashmere texture with well-judged acidity and superb structure. The fruit is darker than Christophe Roumier's Ruchottes, but there is very good weight and persistence on the finish that bodes well for the future.

The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Pure and sensual on the nose, replete with that breath-taking clarity, it dares to show more fruit intensity than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant from DRC served blind alongside. Brilliant. Tasted blind at 67 Pall Mall in London.

The palate is marked by very fine tannin, well judged acidity and quite a structured second half. This is still quite backward, but there is something very stylish here and for those with extraordinary patience it may well blossom...eventually! Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

Vinous (97)

Vinous (95)

Vinous (93-95)

Wine Advocate (95)

Vinous (98+)

The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Pure and sensual on the nose, replete with that breath-taking clarity, it dares to show more fruit intensity than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant from DRC served blind alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries and crushed stone, very mineral-driven with a wonderful, linear finish that is saving fireworks for those with the nous to age this another four or five years. Brilliant. Tasted blind at 67 Pall Mall in London.

Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing some quality new oak on the nose that still needs to be subsumed. It is tightly coiled but it just needs time because there is freshness, definition and beguiling complexity locked in here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well judged acidity and clever use of new oak lending body without compromising terroir expression. The finish feels focused and satisfying and the texture leaves you totally seduced. Class, class, class. Tasted September 2016.
