Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Rousseau's 1995 Chambertin is bright, precise and wonderfully nuanced. There is a sense of translucent brilliance to the 1995 that is simply compelling. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes show striking energy throughout. What a lovely Burgundy this is.

Vinous (90)

The 1995 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. After 23 years there remains plenty of dark berry fruit on the nose mixed with sous-bois, melted tar and brown spices. Compared to the 1996, it does not quite deliver the same precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite introspective and missing the joie-de-vivre I seek from Rousseau's wines. It seems almost weighed down by reputation. I wonder if this peaked around the time I last drank it? Tasted at Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune.

Fresher, deeper red. Much more complex aromas of black cherry, raspberry, leather, game, herbs and spices. Suave, silky and concentrated; fresher than the Clos de la Roche thanks to harmonious acids. Really seamless texture. Finishes with well-buffered tannins, very good grip and strong fruit.

Expressive aromas of cassis, redcurrant, truffle, espresso and spicy oak. Dense, sweet and oaky, with lovely gentle texture and nicely buffered tannins. Stylish rather than powerful, and already displaying a lot of personality. This wine is usually overshadowed by those that follow in this cellar, but it's a lovely Echezeaux.

Sensational, very serious. Clearly a vin de garde, this burly, cellar-worthy red lacks suppleness now, but has amazing depth and great midpalate concentration. Displays lovely rose petal, violet, tar aromas followed by plum, black cherry and cassis flavors. Loads of ripe tannins leads to a sweet-tasting finish that won't quit. Fabulous red Burgundy--a true vin de terroir. The pure, crafty aromas jump out of the glass, titillating with rose petal, violet and tar notes. Fans out with the silkiest mouthfeel imaginable, delivering layers of wet earth, chalky stone, black currant and oak-infused spice. The tannins are amazingly classy, so it's enjoyable upon release, but clearly it should get even better in the cellar. Best from 2005 through 2015. 835 cases made. -PM

The Gros Frere et Soeur Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 1995, a truly opulent burgundy from the celebrated Gros Frère et Soeur estate in the Vosne Romanée village within France's revered Burgundy region, is an embodied testament to both the grandiose vineyard from which it hails, and the hallowed tradition of its vintners. Immaculately crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, silken textures dance with vivid cherry and currant notes, underscored by an enchanting sous-bois character prevalent in older vintages. This wine's complexity deepens with nuances of pomegranate, leather, and dusky earth. A truly exquisite balance of city and nurtured richness. The family-run Gros estate, lauded for its unwavering commitment to terroir-expressionism and uncompromising quality, has passionately borne fruits of distinction for generations. Vinous (93)

Healthy yellow-gold color is fresh for the year. Surprisingly vibrant aromas of fresh peach, pineapple and truffley underbrush really blossomed with air, with the fruit element gaining strength. Juicy and intense, even a tad tight initially, conveying serious inner-mouth energy and mineral support to its highly concentrated, utterly pristine flavors of apricot, almond, smoke and mint. This remarkable, rather powerful wine boasts outstanding retention of fruit and finishes with superb savory persistence. Incidentally, this and the 1990 were the only vintages in my tasting to finish with 14% alcohol; nearly all of the rest are between 13.3% and 13.8%. As most long-time collectors no doubt know by now, 1995 and 1996 were the first white Burgundy vintages in which premature oxidation reared its ugly head, but the pair of wines I tasted from Drouhin came through beautifully--and this 1995 is evolving especially gracefully. (just 30 h/h produced owing to substantial millerandage during a cold flowering; 3.24 pH; 4.2 g/l acidity)

This deep-colored wine has a darker-scented nose than its sibling's, and reveals the same pepper and black fruit scents, yet does not have the herbal component. Very spicy, it is a thickly-textured, full-bodied, dense, and expansive wine redolent with a massive juniper berry, clove, cinnamon, meaty, wild game, brambleberry, mineral, stone, and cassis-liqueur-flavored core. This complex, tightly-wound, and firmly structured wine demands cellaring. Drink it between 2005 and 2015.

Leflaive's 1995 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing well, unfurling in the glass with a complex and rich bouquet of peach, mandarin, confit lemon, honeycomb, saffron and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep and concentrated core, its chewy chassis of dry extract enveloped in fleshy fruit, and it's still lively and vibrant as it approaches its 24th birthday. This was a year of low yields—a cold spell disrupted flowering—and a warm summer, and that's reflected by this muscular, powerful Chevalier.

Wine Advocate (85)

In my article on Ponsot's 1995s out of barrel, I heaped considerable praise on the Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes, describing it as prodigious, and going so far as to say that I would not be surprised if it deserved a perfect rating! At my recent tasting I found it to be light-to-medium ruby-colored with an amber edge. Its slightly alcoholic nose is reminiscent of cherry-flavored Bubbleyum bubblegum mixed with white pepper and grapefruit. On the palate, this wine is a pale shadow of its former self. Amidst an earthy, stony, red pit fruit-flavored, and medium-bodied core, there remains a ghost-like trace of the richness and ripeness I originally had seen in this wine. After it had been opened for 48 hours I re-visited it. To its credit, this Clos de la Roche had not deteriorated, yet it had not gotten any better either. I will not be drinking my remaining bottles in the near term as I want to see if Laurent Ponsot's assertion that these wines will regain their fruit in time is correct. However, I cannot recommend the same course of action to readers as I see no reason to believe that cellaring will help this wine.
