Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (92)Ruby-red. Deep aromas of black plum, licorice and flowers, with complicating hints of truffle and underbrush. Broad, silky and sweet, with impressive volume for the vintage. Bright acids frame but do not dominate the dark fruit, smoke and mineral flavors. Finishes long and suave, with fine-grained tannins. This will give early pleasure for a Charmes-Chambertin from Bachelet. |

Vinous (93-96)Bachelet's 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is striking. Translucent and pulsating in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable energy and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, violet, leather and smoke gradually unfurl in a mysterious, beguiling Charmes that will provide fabulous drinking for many years. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)There are 8 barrels of the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru this year, five of them new. The bouquet demanded encouragement from the glass and it retains a sense of broodiness and introspection. This is holding everything back, although one can see that it leans more to the black side of the fruit spectrum compared to redder Corbeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite succulent tannin, but as always there is real elegance and poise here. It clams up a little towards the finish, just leaves the door open ajar, but sufficient to notice its impressive structure with a tingle of black pepper on the aftertaste. It will need several years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait. |

Vinous (95-97)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is reduced to three and a half barrels this year, half the normal crop. It has a complex nose with dark berry fruit, forest floor and pressed flowers, beautifully-defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is (again) supremely well balanced, quite peppery, with a silver bead of acidity. Darker fruit emerge towards the saline finish that is quite Mazoyères in style. Long tail on the finish. Divine. |

Vinous (87-89)Alas, there is very little of the 2021 Côtes de Nuits Villages (7 instead of 22 barrels). This has a clean and precise, quite minerally bouquet. The palate is sweet and pastille-like on the entry, smooth texture, perhaps just denuded the complexity of more benevolent seasons on the straightlaced finish. It will still give several years' drinking pleasure. |

Wine Advocate (93)The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux has a very precise bouquet: cranberry, wild strawberry and cold slate aromas that feel very focused...aromas with intent! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a crisp line of acidity, a mixture of red and black fruit here infused with blood orange and tangy Seville orange marmalade towards a feisty finish. There is superb length here. It is a really wonderful Les Corbeaux for long-term ageing. |

Vinous (93)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a complex bouquet with brambly red fruit, cranberry, sous-bois and iris flower scents that unfolds wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy dark berry fruits that exert a gentle grip, structured and linear with a granular texture on the finish. Wonderful focus and sense of energy here. Superb. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru has a very tightly-knit bouquet that is actually less expressive than the Village at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with brambly red fruit, very pure and harmonious, almost understated and yet with Bachelet's precision defining the tender finish. Irresistible. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016. Still, this is a lovely wine. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has such a pretty nose that disguises the trauma of the growing season: ebullient redcurrant, white-tipped strawberry and light stony scents. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)Bright, deep red. Enticing, nuanced aromas of black raspberry, mocha, game, iron and animal fur. Suave and silky, with nicely integrated acidity framing the sappy red fruit and torrefaction flavors. This shows lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and lingering red fruits. But does it have the classic thrust of great Chambertin? |

Vinous (91-94)Bright medium red. Sexy nose combines black raspberry, minerals and musky espresso. Fat, sweet, fine-grained and lush; in an elegant, even understated style, and not at all a powerhouse. But there's no shortage of tannic spine here. The silky texture carries through to the long finish. This is aging in 100% new oak, whereas most of the rest of the 2007s are getting about 70%, as Mortet is slowly but steadily cutting back on his use of new barriques |
