Veneto

Veneto, located in north-eastern Italy, is a region renowned for its outstanding fine wines. With a long winemaking history and diverse terroir, Veneto offers a wide range of exceptional wines that captivate wine enthusiasts around the world. The region is home to renowned vineyards and wineries that have gained international recognition for their quality and craftsmanship.

One of the most famous vineyards in Veneto is Allegrini, known for producing Amarone della Valpolicella, a prestigious and robust red wine made from dried grapes. Another prominent vineyard is Tommasi, which specializes in Amarone and Valpolicella wines, showcasing the rich flavors and complexity of the region. Zenato is also notable, producing acclaimed wines such as Amarone and Lugana.

The flagship wine of Veneto is Prosecco, a sparkling wine that has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. The region of Valdobbiadene-Conegliano is the heartland of Prosecco production, with renowned vineyards such as Nino Franco, Bisol, and Ruggeri producing exceptional examples of this lively and refreshing sparkling wine.

Valpolicella, a red wine region within Veneto, is famous for its red wines made primarily from Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes. Wineries like Masi, Tedeschi, and Zeni produce outstanding Valpolicella wines, ranging from the vibrant and fruity Valpolicella Classico to the full-bodied and concentrated Amarone.

Veneto is also known for its sweet wine, Recioto di Soave, made from the Garganega grape. Wineries such as Pieropan and Suavia craft elegant and luscious Recioto di Soave wines that display the region's expertise in producing exquisite dessert wines.

Whether you are exploring the elegant Prosecco, the rich Amarone della Valpolicella, or the luscious Recioto di Soave, Veneto offers a remarkable selection of fine wines that showcase the region's winemaking excellence. With its unique terroir, indigenous grape varieties, and commitment to quality, Veneto continues to enchant wine lovers with its outstanding wine offerings.

Vinous (88)

Bight pale straw. Almost pungent herbal nuances to the aromas of citrus fruit and apple. Then herbal and tactile with good weight to the orchard fruit and botanical herb flavors but comes across as a little simple, even a touch bitter at the back.

Vinous (91)

The 2021 Soave Classico lifts from the glass with an intense burst of sour citrus, crushed rocks, sea spray and sour melon. Its medium-weight textures wash across the palate with prominence, nicely contrasted by a reverberation of sweet and sour green citrus and zesty acidity. Granny Smith apples and exotic inner florals cascade throughout the finale, as the 2021 tapers off with unexpected length. Wait, this is an “entry-level” Soave Classico? Bravo. (Lot # 14.02.22)

Celebrating its 50th anniversary (1971-2021), the organic Pieropan 2021 Soave Classico Calvarino has a soft and richly textured side that is contrasted against the bright citrusy and mineral flavors that the Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes are known for. This blend sees 70% of the first grape and 30% of the second, and the wine is aged in cement for up to 15 months. That's the special quality offered by Calvarino, a wine that is modern yet also rooted in local tradition. You get a lot of food-pairing potential out of this bottle, whether it be sushi or roasted chicken. Production is 70,000 bottles.

Vinous (94)

The 2019 Soave Classico Monte Grande lifts from the glass to show kiwi and crushed stone, along with pretty honeyed florals, in an airy and wonderfully fresh display. It’s intense and sharply focused, also quite mineral in style with orange zests and is salty to the core. This tapers off long, with residual acids keeping the mouth watering. It’s a classic in the making. Monte Grande is a blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave, which is left to dry on the vines for an extra month after the first harvest.

Vinous (94)

The 2012 Amabile del Cerè is flat-out stunning, boasting a seductive display of baked apple, fig paste, mint, spiced orange and hints of burnt sugar. It’s weighty and textural yet full of vibrant energy, as floral-laced peach, honey and hints of buttercream give way to candied citrus and a note of brown sugar. This is unrelenting pleasure and opulence in a glass, as layer upon layer of contrasting sweet and sour notes repeatedly thrills the senses. It lingers for well over a minute with hints of tropical fruit and florals. The Amabile del Cere uses the same mix of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Saorin as the Bianco Secco, yet it’s air-dried prior to vinification. It’s only produced in years when Quintarelli feels that the Bianco Secco is strong enough to stand on its own without the addition of the Amabile’s fruit. The 2012 should not be missed.

Crafting a true masterpiece, the Venissa Bianco 2015 hails from the Venetian lagoon's storied vineyards on the island of Mazzorbo. This ethereal offering, meticulously produced by the prestigious Bisol family, elegantly embodies the unique terroir of its origins.

The Venissa Bianco 2015 captivates with its rarity and exclusivity, being crafted entirely of the ancient and near-extinct Dorona grape, with only 4000 bottles produced. Employing traditional winemaking techniques, this wine rested for two years in ancient clay amphorae and cement tanks before meeting the world.

Expressing a golden hue, this wine dazzles your senses with complex aromas of honey, nuts, and tropical fruits, balanced beautifully by a savoury minerality. The palate is rich and seductive, drawn out in a long, thought-provoking finish. An enchanting exemplification of Venissian mastery, the Venissa Bianco 2015 pairs perfectly with fine Mediterranean cuisine, while offering vibrant cellaring potential.

Unquestionably, the Venissa Bianco 2015 is a resplendent embodiment of Dorona's indomitable spirit and Bisol's heritage-driven passion.
