The 2008 Barolo is once again superb. The striking aromatics that are so typical of the year make a strong first impression. Delicate and silky on the palate, yet also deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2008 is pure seduction. A hint of grip from the tannins appears on the finish, but with some air, the 2008 is quite open. It will be interesting to see if the 2008 ever goes into a shell. Thus far, it has remained surprisingly open for a young Barolo from a cool, late-ripening vintage.

Brovia’s Serralunga Barolo, the 2008 Barolo Ca’ Mia, saturates every corner of the palate. Dark fruit, smoke, melted road tar, graphite and incense wrap around the palate in this dramatic large-scaled Barolo. Even more promising than it was right after bottling, the 2008 impresses for its spherical personality and towering class. Serralunga is, of course, best known for producing powerful wines, but Brovia’s Ca’Mia is just as remarkable for its superb finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

The 2008 Barolo Villero is impeccable and harmonious from the very first taste. Layers of exotic spices and dark fruit caress the palate, eliminating virtually any sensation of tannin. The 2008 is an unusually fleshy, expressive Villero loaded with class and personality. Dark plums, menthol and a host of balsamic aromas and flavors wrap around the finish. The Villero is a bit rounder and fleshier than the Rocche today, but it is just as gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.

The 2008 Barbaresco Santo Stefano has the same color the 1987 had when it was 20 years old, which is to say almost rose colored. I don’t think the 2008 will make its 20th birthday, however. This is a light, translucent, fleeting wine with very little fruit and body. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016.

The 2008 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto (aged 36 months in botte grande) is a gorgeous wine from every perspective. Its 360-degree beauty shines comes through in terms of the intensity of the bouquet and the elegance of the mouthfeel. Again, super-finely textured tannins give the wine backbone and create a supporting structure for rich fruit flavors. There-s just enough consistency here to fill the palate, yet the wine is never heavy or flat. It shows vibrant energy thanks to the natural freshness and that beautiful note of garden fresh red rose that pops up as nostalgic sign-off. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2040.

Firm, racy tannins provide the backbone for the 2008 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe. Dark, balsamic notes wrap around a core of black fruit as this powerful, strapping Barolo shows off its class. Big, chewy tannins support the huge finish in an imposing Barolo full of intrigue. It will be a number of years before the 2008 hits its stride, but it is fabulous, even today. The San Giuseppe is much less expressive than the Vignolo, which is typically the case when the wines are young. It will almost certainly blossom with more time in bottle.

The 2008 Barolo Via Nuova is round, seamless and totally impeccable. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are some of the nuances that emerge from the super-sexy, refined Via Nuova. The integration of oak, fruit and structure is fabulous. Bright red berries, minerals and freshly cut flowers add considerable brightness on the polished, totally refined finish. I especially like the energy and sense of focus in the Via Nuova this year. This is a lovely effort from the charismatic Chiara Boschis.

Sweet rich, lush and layered, yet also remarkably light on its feet, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino dazzles from start to finish. Sweet roses, red berries, flowers, mint and orange peel all take an appearance in this utterly impeccable polished Brunello I imagine the 2008 will still be a special wine at age 30. The aromas are naturally still quite primary, so some cellaring is advisable. The brutal August hailstorm took with it a full 40% of the production, but left behind a strikingly beautiful Brunello endowed with seemingly endless layers of fruit and fabulous overall balance.

A wine of remarkable finesse and nuance, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is exceptionally beautiful. The 2008 is refined, silky and nuanced, especially within the context of the vintage. Freshly cut flowers, cedar, tobacco and anise are all beautifully delineated throughout. I am quite impressed with how well the 2008 has come together over the last few years. Two thousand eight will be remembered as the year of the devastating mid-August hail. Quite miraculously, the Poggio al Vento emerged pretty much unscathed.

(from vines averaging 30 years of age): Bright, deep red. Ripe, minerally aromas of cherry liqueur, spun sugar, mocha, flowers and sweet oak. Wonderfully fat, sweet, creamy and full, especially in the context of this vintage. Saturates the palate with a wave of raspberry, mocha and truffle flavors. Remarkably showy already but this should be a cellar treasure. Finishes with extremely refined tannins and outstanding length. A baby today, even if its high quality is easy to see. The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella is compelling. With a little air, the tannins begin to soften, releasing a myriad of intense dark aromas and flavors. Bittersweet chocolate, cloves, violets, plums and blackberry jam cover every inch of the palate in a stunning, headspinning Amarone that captures all of the best qualities of the year. When Romano Dal Forno's wines are on, there is nothing quite like them, and that is certainly the case here. If opened young, the 2008 needs a little air. Actually, a lot of air.

The 2008 Barolo Cannubi Riserva 1752 is a new wine from one of the best parcels within Cannubi that celebrated the first known mention of the vineyard's name on a bottle. Two thousand eight is a vintage of polished, refined Barolos and Cannubi is one of the top sites in all of Barolo. Sadly, none of that comes through in this dark, concentrated, oak-laden Barolo. Damilano has everything they need to make world-class Barolo, certainly much more than most of their neighbors, but it's time for some things to change.

(Clerico is no longer using Ginestra on the label as of 2007: a change in the law recognized numerous crus, including Ginestra, but since many other growers use Ginestra on their labels, Clerico decided to name this wine after his own parcel): Medium red. Deeper and richer on the nose than the Pajana, with scents of redcurrant, mocha, dried flowers and earth. Wonderfully deep, layered and sweet; lush but with good limestone lift. The 2008 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is an exceptional wine that is only made in the best years. It was produced in 2008, 2010 and 2013. The wine undergoes a 40-day maceration time with four years in oak and one more year of bottle aging. The results are sublime and generous. Riserva Rüncot opens to a beautifully tempered and expressive bouquet that exhibits elements of wild berry, forest floor, candied fruit, licorice, cola and dried ginger. The balsamic signature is particularly beautiful and elegant. Smooth and silky tannins denote the mouthfeel and carry the wine forward over the palate. This is one of the top releases from Piedmont this year.

Good full, deep red. Compelling perfume of musky strawberry, wild game, smoky minerality and underbrush. Broad and sweet, but with outstanding definition and a magically light touch to its fruit, mineral and spice flavors. The 2008 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of my favorite recent vintages. It is the product of an exceptionally long and cool growing year marked by a highly unusual cold snap at the very end of the season. Those conditions yielded a Monfortino that is pure silkiness and sensuality, with striking aromatic presence and exceptional balance. There is an exoticism to the 2008 that is impossible to miss, while the impression is of tannins that are virtually non-existent. The 2008 was such a complete wine right from the outset that Roberto Conterno decided to bottle it with six years in cask as opposed to the more typical seven.

Guido Fantino describes 2008 as an unbelievable vintage, with a near-perfect vegetative cycle, and perfect day-night temperature differences.

This floods the palate with flavor and lingers with exceptional purity and persistence.

Wine Advocate (97)

Wonderfully brisk, complete wine with an explosive back end featuring great tannic structure and outstanding aromatic lift. I wouldn't call this powerful wine fat or silky, but it's utterly seamless and incredibly suave. Should be a cellar classic.

Good medium red. Ineffable soil-driven aromas of strawberry, dried flowers, rust, mocha and pungent minerality. Juicy and highly complex, offering saline, savory flavors of strawberry, minerals and underbrush. This is about white soil perfume and subtlety, not weight but there's terrific intensity nevertheless. Finishes suave and vibrant, with uncanny subtle length. Built for a long and graceful life in bottle. Mascarello owns 6.5 hectares of this prime south-facing cru in Castiglione Falletto. He has mostly lampia clone planted here but also has 18% old-vines michet and 6% rose.
