Kirwan (Margaux; 73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13% Merlot; 8% Cabernet Franc; 6% Petit Verdot; 13% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting; Eric Boissenot is the consultant here). Beautiful in the glass, with a very radiant lilac rim. This is pure and lifted and very true to its recent style. It is ultra-fresh but there is no harsh edge to the acidity. Instead, there is great lift and precision to the bright, crunchy cassis, redcurrant and briary bramble fruit. Another Margaux wine in this vintage that is pure and compact, the fruit clinging tightly to the spine. Some will no doubt find this a little slender but I rather like that (and I suspect it’ll put on further flesh during élevage). Laser-sharp in its precision, this is impressively pure and linear. It is so very different to how it used to be, with no hint of the oak. I am a fan.

A firm and subtle red with blackcurrant and spice aromas and flavors. Medium body. Refined tannins. Nicely crafted.

Deep crimson. Very sweet nose – an oak thing? Round and fleshy on palate entry and then the acidity creeps in. Is there the odd green note, perhaps from the Petit Verdot? Certainly a perfectly respectable refreshing, medium-bodied claret. Less ripe than the Giscours 2021 tasted alongside.

The 2021 Château Kirwan should certainly be outstanding, with the pretty, medium-bodied, elegant style of the vintage. Giving up both red and blue fruits as well as some floral notes, it has good freshness, outstanding purity of fruit, and fine tannins.

Dark chocolate powder and ripe blackcurrants on the nose. Succulent and supple on the palate, this has a nice bouncy, plush and plump feeling to it. It's not massively expansive but does have a great mouthfeel in terms of texture and overall generosity of flavours. Tannins are fine and the juicy acidity is really to the fore here alongside some lovely floral elements. Bright and perky though still quite linear, with a nice initial impact and long finish. This should improve during ageing.

Bright ruby and violet in colour, careful extraction but this doesnt entirely cover the rhubarb and redcurrant fruits that mark the high acidity throug the body of thewine. There are gorgeous floral aromatics though that situate you firmly iiin Margaux.
