Lafaurie-Peyraguey 2001 (6x150cl)
Wow. Unbelievable. Loads of lush spice and honey, with syrupy aromas. Full-bodied and superthick, with masses of fruit and a long, long finish. I have to buy some of this! Score range: 95-100
Drinking Window: 2007 - 2027

(-) Pale yellow-gold. Superripe aromas of apricot, quince, marzipan and rose oil, along with vanillin oak. Dense and very sweet but light on its feet. At once salty and tactile and utterly smooth and seamless. Very long, slow-building finish features a superripe marzipan note and a whiplash of fruit.

The 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a very refined, elegant bouquet that demonstates more mineralite than the previous vintages: great tension here with marmalade, quince and dried honey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening. The acidity is nicely judged with touches of spice and nutmeg, although the finish is quite linear and does not quite deliver the panache of its peers. Still, this is drinking extremely well now and should continue to give pleasure over the next decade or so.

Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey boasts a strikingly beautiful 13th century fortress. This estate has had numerous great wines since the 1980s, impressive even in lesser vintages. In 2014 it was bought by Silvio Denz, bringing a no-expense-spared attitude. The future is bright for this already popular Sauternes.
