Leoville Poyferre 2009 (12x75cl)
Having retreated into its shell, the deep garnet colored 2009 Léoville Poyferré gives up slowly revealing notions of cigar boxes, pencil lead, charcoal, rose hip tea and fragrant earth with a core of preserved plums, crème de cassis, espresso and Indian spices. Full, rich, seductive and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, the palate features firm yet beautifully velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and spicy.

Wonderful aromas of currant and blackberry, with black olives. Full-bodied, with a mouth-coating palate of supersoft tannins that go on and on. Solid and polished. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. Score range: 93-96 -JS

On the nose, there's an explosion of pure fruit from blackberries to currants, and vanilla too. This is still a little baby. Full and dense with chewy tannins. Big and rich, but very balanced. Barrel sample.

(a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc; 13.95% alcohol; pH 3.76; 88 IPT) Inky purple. Brooding, masculine nose offers black plum, chocolate liqueur, orange peel and espresso. Soft and supple on entry, then a bit youthfully aggressive in the middle, but with a distinctly chewy texture supporting the ultraripe black plum and chocolate flavors. Finishes with building, slightly dry tannins and hints of Oriental plum liqueur and peppery soy sauce. Always a sexy wine, this Leoville Poyferre has excellent balance and is more discreet than some other vintages of the last 20 years. It may still be a little short on finesse, but it's hard to argue with its almost decadent, voluptuous appeal. Very well done, and likely to be one of the ch a teau's most successful wines ever.

They tend to start to pick later than Barton ends. Very bright purple. Very crystal clear. Plush and inky and polished and sumptuous. Masses of flesh. Seductive and with lots of mass. Polished.
93-95 Barrel sample. Firm, but solid, densely packed with tannins, new wood and a fine concentrated texture. It is big, but balanced, the only default being a high toast element.

Chateau Léoville Poyferré has emerged as perhaps the second most important St. Julien estate behind Léoville las Cases. The property can trace its history all the way back to 1638, but that history is a tortuous path of ownership and name changes as part of what came to be called the "Léoville" estate. The modern excellence of the estate can be dated to 1979 when Didier Cuvelier took over its management. Since his retirement in 2017 it has been run very ably by his niece Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The 60ha estate has some wonderful plots in the 'Grand Clos' bordering Las Cases. Léoville Poyferré shot to fame with the 2009 vintage which was scored a perfect 100 points by Robert M. Parker. This second growth is a classic Saint-Julien producing some very finely structured, long-lived claret. Elegance is the name of the game with Poyferre, much as it is with neighbouring Leovilles Las-Cases and Barton. A remarkably consistent performer among Bordeaux producers, the value of this estate’s Grand Vin as well as second wine Pavillon makes it an annual favourite with collectors and drinkers alike.
