Leoville Poyferre 2010 (6x75cl)
Another massive, incredible release from this estate is the 2010 Léoville Poyferré. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the balance Petit Verdot, its inky purple color is followed by a massive, full-bodied, incredibly concentrated 2010 that has awesome notes of pure crème de cassis, licorice, graphite, and spring flowers. As with the 2009, it has incredible depth of fruit, yet a slightly more focused, classic style, which is very much in the style of the 2010 vintage. With its new oak completely absorbed by its wealth of fruit, perfect balance, and sweet tannin, it’s a sensational, monumental effort to drink over the coming 3-4 decades.

A wine of architectural strength and classical proportions, this has straight lines that mark the packed, concentrated fruits, which are sustained by its tannins. This is certainly the best wine that Léoville-Poyferré has produced, sumptuous while so finely structured.

The 2010 Léoville-Poyferré has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, briary cedar and light estuarine/seaweed aromas that are very well defined. Pure class. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, layers of pure black fruit laced with pencil lead and a pinch of white pepper. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish, a Saint-Julien demonstrating wonderful density and precision. What an outstanding wine, perhaps less flamboyant than other vintages, one that will last decades. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Léoville Poyferré opens with notes of sautéed herbs and pencil shavings on the nose, giving way to scents of redcurrant jelly, baked plums and cedar chest plus a waft of cassis. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has pleasant energy and well-played, lightly chewy tannins with compelling freshness on the finish.

Chateau Léoville Poyferré has emerged as perhaps the second most important St. Julien estate behind Léoville las Cases. The property can trace its history all the way back to 1638, but that history is a tortuous path of ownership and name changes as part of what came to be called the "Léoville" estate. The modern excellence of the estate can be dated to 1979 when Didier Cuvelier took over its management. Since his retirement in 2017 it has been run very ably by his niece Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The 60ha estate has some wonderful plots in the 'Grand Clos' bordering Las Cases. Léoville Poyferré shot to fame with the 2009 vintage which was scored a perfect 100 points by Robert M. Parker. This second growth is a classic Saint-Julien producing some very finely structured, long-lived claret. Elegance is the name of the game with Poyferre, much as it is with neighbouring Leovilles Las-Cases and Barton. A remarkably consistent performer among Bordeaux producers, the value of this estate’s Grand Vin as well as second wine Pavillon makes it an annual favourite with collectors and drinkers alike.
