The Clos de la Barre is one of the highlights of the Jadot portfolio this year, wafting from the glass with a bouquet of raspberry, red cherry, candied peel and raw cocoa, elegantly framed by new oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full and supple, cool but open-knit. It's a giving and texturally refined Volnay.
Here too the wood influence is anything but subtle on the overtly spicy liqueur-like dark berry fruit aromas. The big-bodied and exceptionally rich medium weight plus flavors brim with sappy dry extract that does a reasonably good job of buffering the firm, robust and moderately rustic finale. This is a big Volnay and actually more resembles a muscular and powerful Clos des Chênes than a Volnay of lace and grace.

(just nine hectoliters per hectare produced): Good dark red. Imploded nose hints at black cherry, licorice and menthol; shows less lift and perfume than the Santenots. Then reasonably supple and sweet if in a more brooding style, showing an element of coffee oak to go with its cherry and menthol qualities. Finishes with firm, dusty tannins. A reasonably ripe wine, but less relaxed and pliant than the Santenots.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre had a very slight reduction on the nose, slightly meaty but there is plenty of fruit here. Maybe there is just a faint touch of brettanomyces? The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, good depth and body here although like the Santenots, I would be seeking more detail and terroir expression on the finish.
