The Coulée de Serrant is a vineyard initially planted almost 900 years ago by the local Cistercian monastery (the 2018 vintage is its 888th consecutive harvest). It is a monopole which is one of only four single-vineyard appellations owned by a single estate in France, the others being Romanée-Conti, La Tâche and Château Grillet – pretty good company to be in!

Coulée de Serrant has been described by Jancis Robinson MW as "one of the world's greatest vineyards" while Richard Kelley MW has compared Coulée de Serrant with none other than Montrachet Grand Cru. The biodynamic beauty that Nicolas Joly produces from the steep slopes of this magnificent vineyard is clearly one of the world's greatest wines.

Producer

Nicolas Joly

Nicholas Joly left JP Morgan to run the Coulee de Serrant estate in 1977. Situated in Savennieres, this is Chenin Blanc country. Joly's fortunes turned after reading a book by Rudolf Steiner about biodynamic principles. First trialling the ideas he then changed his approach and rejuvenated the vines. His approach produces wine with identity and expression.
