Representing an "alternative expression" of Shiraz, distinct to Grange, St Henri is widely regarded as more elegantly crafted, with classical aromatics more reminiscent to a top Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie.Aged in large, old oak vats, which allow the power of its plush forest fruit to shine through, we found the 98-point 2016 brooding, powerful and intellectual, whilst also displaying fresh, elegant black bramble fruit and wild flowers. It is a testament to Penfolds' ability to render a more refined, old world-inspired interpretation of the variety; "the essence of South Australia Shiraz" (Wine Advocate). It is a masterpiece and one of the finest vintages we can recall of St. Henri. Every time we taste a new release we do so with a sense of eagerness, an overachiever, which represents incredible value, especially as it competes with Grange in every way possible. James Suckling awarded the 2016 a soaring 98 points, just two shy of Grange 2015s perfect 100, and his highest score to date. He refers to St Henri 2016 as "a real masterpiece" and "among the finest vintages" ever. Known for youthful approachability and ineffable balance, but it is most certainly built to last over several decades. Tasting it last week we got the impression it would offer upwards of 30-plus years of excellent cellaring potential.
