Wine Advocate scores for Austrian legendary sweet wine producer Kracher are hot off the press. And what scores they are!
After a string of difficult vintages stretching back to 2008, the stars finally lined up for Kracher in 2017, and the estate produced a simply stunning range of wines. All four of selections score 97, 97+ or 98 points from Wine Advocate.
Kracher is one the world’s leading estates for botrytised (sweet) wines. The estate is capable of producing wine absolutely on par with Château d’Yquem or the best of Tokaji. Working in Burgenland, Austria, Alois Kracher crafted an enviable reputation for making stunning sweet whites. His personal story is also very moving, suffering malnutrition and absolute poverty in Nazi Germany. Stephen Brook at Decanter called Alois “the great master” who “for two decades produced some of the world’s most complex botrytised wines”.
Following Alois’ death in 2007, grandson Gerhard keeps alive the traditions of the estate, producing beautiful wines that rival the very best in Sauternes and Tokaji at much lower prices. Antonio Galloni is also a great fan of the estate, praising the “stunningly beautiful and rich dessert wines” produced here over the years.
The four 2017 wines we present today are a diverse range of sweeties produced from Chardonnay or Chardonnay blended with Welschriesling. The 2017 is unquestionably the finest produced here for many years, and collectors need to take note. Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate Calls the No. 10 2017: “possibly the finest TBA I have tasted from Gerhard Kracher”.
For their quality and scarcity, these wines are incredibly affordable with the 98 point No 10 TBA only a third the price of the equivalent Château d’Yquem.
