Awarded an epic 99 points by Tim Atkin MW in his recent Special Report on South Africa, 2019 was a very solid vintage in the Swartland with close to the average rainfall and even bub break followed by a lengthy, cool and dry growing season. Louw described the fruit as “flawless” when it came time to pick, being perfectly ripe and concentrated yet far fuller and less desiccated than in some previously hot years.

“One of the world’s great Syrah vineyards” in the words of Tim Atkin MW, the hugely respected critic noted that whilst the 2019 was “just short of perfection”, it “is still brilliant”. Beguilingly complex even in its extreme infancy with “leafy, spicy, rose petal aromas”, there is a tremendous purity of red fruits and crisp berries framed by impeccably composed tannins and a touch of oak as pitch-perfect seasoning across the finish of the wine.

About Porseleinberg

One of the immensely impressive South African projects founded by the legendary Marc Kent, Porseleinberg has quickly risen to become one of the world’s, not just South Africa’s, most in-demand wines thanks to its breath-taking quality and significant rarity.

It was Kent’s quest to source terroir suitable for the cultivation of top quality Rhône varietals for his Boekenhoutskloof and Chocolate Block labels which led to the emergence of Porseleinberg. Naturally drawn to the Swartland for this purpose, his search was completed when he came across a 173-acre farm atop the Porseleinberg mountain which was purchased in 2009. After re-planting to Syrah and Grenache, it was quickly decided that a pure Syrah had the potential to be something really quite special – and so it came to pass...

One need only look at the previous three vintages of Porseleinberg to comprehend the power and seriousness of this cuvée as a presence on the international fine wine stage. Awarded 97 points in 2017, a perfect 100 in 2018 and a very close 99 points in 2019 courtesy of Tim Atkin MW, this is an elixir of uncommon brilliance.

The arrival of Callie Louw as winemaker and viticulturist for this project will no doubt be seen as one of the greatest appointments in South Africa’s emergent fine wine scene of all time. A farmer at heart with the skill of a sculpture when it comes to crafting sensational wines, he is most comfortable amongst the vines be it pruning or harvesting, and shuns the increasingly glamourous regard in which his wines are held!
