Vinous (91)Dark red. Superripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, plum, tobacco leaf and spice. Lush, dense and tactile in the mouth, with a youthfully sweet merlot middle supported by sangiovese structure. Slow-building, very long aftertaste features fine but substantial tooth-coating tannins. An impressive showing. |

Vinous (90)A joint venture with Capannelle of Chianti Classico, which supplies the sangiovese to complement the Avignonesi merlot. Deep garnet-edged ruby. Very spicy, expressive aromas of ripe, sweet plum complicated by clove, cinnamon and cedar from the oak. Long and vigorous on the palate; fresher than the 1997 Desiderio, with livelier acidity from the sangiovese. A bit less weighty but with compensating balance in the middle palate and focus and thrust on the aftertaste. Unquestionably the best series from the house in the 1990s. |
