Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

It’s surely no coincidence that Boekenhoutskloof moved into its swanky new cellar in 2018, as the quality of most of its wines has gone up a notch. This comes from two excellent growers on the Helderberg and is wonderfully focused, layered and complex with some underlying grip, blackcurrant leaf top notes and some seasoning from 5% Cabernet Franc.

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2014 (6x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (92)

Bright, dark ruby-red. Wild aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and aromatic herbs. Densely packed but at the same time delineated and tactile, with dark berry, spice and violet flavors carrying through a firmly tannic, very long finish. This lovely young Syrah shows real personality and concentration, not to mention energy and lift. But it's still quite youthfully unevolved and worth holding for a few years.

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2017 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

Gottfried Mocke has the advantage of using grapes from two contrasting but equally wonderful Syrah sites to produce this impressive red: Goldmine on decomposed schist and Porseleinberg on rocky, unyielding schist. Showing subtle stony aromas, it's deftly oaked, layered and very complex, with cherry and blackberry fruit, nuanced tannins and racy, refreshing acidity. One of the Cape's best examples.

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2018 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (97)

Given that 80% of Boekenhoutskloof's Syrah now hails from Porseleinberg (the remainder is from Goldmine), it's no surprise that this is such an impressive wine. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, it's subtle, scented and almost delicate, with filigree tannins, rose petal top notes, some clove and nutmeg spice and a hint of oak.
