    About Azienda Agricola Brovia

    Few producers in Piedmont have experienced such a meteoric rise in prestige in recent years as Brovia, described by Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) as “one of the brightest stars of Castiglione Falletto”. That is lavish praise indeed given this region is home to both Paolo Scavino and Roagna, but Brovia wears it well, making wine the old fashioned way whilst crafting Barolos that are effortlessly balanced, ethereal and long-lived.

    A family firm run by Elena Brovia, in tandem with her Catalan husband Alex Sanchez, the wines are fermented naturally in concrete tanks before ageing takes place in large, old oak vessels resulting in old-school Barolo as it is meant to be.

    Their wines are muscular, intense and long-lived, but unlike the hard-edged Barolo of days gone by, they are ineffably elegant and charming. Quite simply, these are absolute must-haves for lovers of the long-cherished classic style of wines from the likes of Rinaldi, Bartolo Mascarello, Roagna and Canonica – when only “proper” Barolo will do, look no further than Brovia.

    Brovia's 2016 Barbera d'Alba Sorì del Drago is dark and brooding in the glass. Black cherry, smoke, crushed rocks, cloves, licorice and melted road tar confer density and virile power. Dark and massively concentrated, the 2016 will drink well for at least a handful of years. I would prefer to give the 2016 a bit more time in bottle to allow it to shed some of its considerable baby fat.

    The 2005 Barolo Riserva 150 Anniversario Rocche-Villero is one of the standouts of a very impressive lineup of Barolos. It races out of the blocks with a layered nose of enticing black fruit laced with melted tar, wilted rose petals and a subtle brine note. Medium-bodied on the palate, delivering firm tannins and counterbalanced by a perfect line of acidity, the dark berry fruit laced with dark chocolate and a hint of fennel.     Brovia's 2018 Barolo is a very good wine for the vintage and within its peer group. It naturally shows the modest structure of the year, but all the elements are nicely balanced. Sweet dried cherry, mint, cedar, tobacco and crushed leaves open nicely. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next handful of years. As always, the straight Barolo is a blend of 70% Brea and 30% a mix of the other sites in the range. It is very nicely done.

Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun.

In 2016, the Garblèt Sue’ is incredibly sensual, with finer tannins than are the norm. A range of floral and savory notes add striking aromatic lift and exotic perfume. This is the most polished vintage of the Garblèt Sue’ I can remember tasting. As always, the Garblèt Sue’ is marked by a very obvious nervousness in its tannins, but the 2016 also has more than enough fruit to balance things out.

Plush fruit and silky tannins suggest the 2016 will drink well with just a few years in bottle. The 2016 is so alluring, even in the early going; it is not austere at all. The 2016 is fabulous - that’s pretty much all there is to it.

    Showing some immediate softness, the 2015 Barolo Garblèt Sue' is beautifully approachable and generously accommodating, even at this early stage in the wine's drinking window. Bring it out with a selection of goat cheeses. It's interesting to note that, at 40 years old, the vines of this cru in Castiglione Falletto actually rank as some of the youngest held by the Brovia estate, founded in 1863, before the unification of Italy.

    The 2016 Barolo Garblèt Sue’ is laced with bright red small berry fruit, wild flowers, sage, mint, star anise, apricot and blood orange. In 2016, the Garblèt Sue’ is incredibly sensual, with finer tannins than are the norm. A range of floral and savory notes add striking aromatic lift and exotic perfume. This is the most polished vintage of the Garblèt Sue’ I can remember tasting. As always, the Garblèt Sue’ is marked by a very obvious nervousness in its tannins, but the 2016 also has more than enough fruit to balance things out.

    The 2011 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is sweet, floral and wonderfully expressive, all Brovia signatures. Silky tannins provide the backdrop as this sensual, polished Barolo shows off its class. Perfumed notes are woven throughout, but it is the wine's exceptional textural finesse that stands out most. Hints of hard candy, mint, cinnamon and succulent red cherries add the final shades of dimension. In 2011, the Rocche stands out for its total sense of class.

    The 2016 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione Brovia is explosive and exuberant from the very first taste. There is a rush of sweet red plum, red cherry, mint, blood orange, cinnamon and wild flowers in this rich, heady Barolo that captures the essence of this Castiglione Falletto site. Plush fruit and silky tannins suggest the 2016 will drink well with just a few years in bottle. The 2016 is so alluring, even in the early going; it is not austere at all. The 2016 is fabulous - that’s pretty much all there is to it.
