Jean-Louis Chave
Domaine Chave was founded in 1481. It has been blessed with an “incredible succession of talented vignerons” (Jeb Dunnuck) through the ages. Gérard Chave ran the estate until Gérard before slowly handing over to son Jean-Louis Chave. This is a traditional estate which keeps an eye on the future (a recently completed new cellar includes a state-of-the-art lab). Vinification is in three large oak upright casks. Aging is in small French oak barrels with the amount of new oak falling in the 20-30% range. The wines are then blended in tank and bottled without being filtered. If needed, the wines can see a light egg-white fining before bottling.

Jeb Dunnuck (100)As good as Hermitage can get, the 2015 Hermitage from Jean-Louis Chave reminds me of a hypothetical mix of the 2010 and 1990 with its incredible purity, finesse, and elegant paired with awesome depth and structure. This heavenly wine exhibits a deep purple color as well as a powerful bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberries, dried violets, graphite, and crushed rocks, with a liquid mineral component that’s just about impossible to find outside of the Bessards lieu-dit in Hermitage. Full-bodied and massively concentrated on the palate, yet with laser-like precision and clarity, it needs a solid decade of cellaring and will keep for 40+ years or more. It’s not as sexy or overt as the Cuvee Cathelin, but is every bit as good. |

Vinous (97)Light brilliant yellow. An intensely perfumed, powerful bouquet evokes fresh pear, peach nectar, anise, iodine and candied ginger, and a smoky mineral quality builds steadily in the glass. Sappy, seamless and incisive on the palate, offering intense orchard and pit fruit and honeysuckle flavors that are lifted and braced by a core of dusty minerality and a bitter jolt of orange pith. Clings with superb tenacity on the mineral-driven finish, leaving sexy floral and ripe citrus fruit notes behind. |
