Clos du Caillou

With 53 hectares in Cotes-du Rhone & Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Clos du Caillou’s vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir mainly from “galets roulés” and sand. Along with an expressive terroir, the domaine produces wines in an environment friendly way using organic fertilizer, no herbicide and hand harvests all their grapes to produce high-quality wines.

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2012 (6x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

Lastly, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou is a classic example of this cuvee. Made from 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, aged all in demi-muid, it offers ample dark fruits, chocolate, bouquet garni and licorice in its full-bodied, supple, forward and elegantly styled profile. As with all of the 2012s here, the tannin is wonderfully ripe, the wine has solid concentration and everything is perfectly balanced. While it’s hard to resist already, it will be better with short-term cellaring and have 15+ years of overall longevity.

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The cream of the lineup and one of the stars of the vintage is the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou. Incorporating more Mourvèdre than normal (a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Mourvèdre), this smokin’ southern Rhône sports a deep ruby/purple color to go with notes of blackcurrants, white pepper, orange liqueur and graphite. Big, full-bodied, supple and elegant, it’s certainly not as massive as some of the greats from this estate (2001, 2005, 2007 or 2010), but hats off to the team for producing a wine of this quality in a difficult vintage.

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (98)

Captivating spice-led nose, this is a lithe, dynamic and athletic style of Châteauneuf. Very well balanced and focused with great aromatic precision. The alcohol is gently warming on the finish but this is nonetheless just gorgeous. Grown on sand in lieux-dits La Guigasse and Pignan, destemmed, fermented in tronconic vats then matured mostly in demi-muid and a 10% portion in amphora for 14 months.

Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz also looks to be a step up over the 2018, with rockstar levels of blackberry and kirsch fruits interwoven with lots of garrigue, sappy flowers, and melted licorice. This big, opulent, super-plush, and sexy 2019 is flawlessly balanced, has great tannins, and a monster of a finish. Count me impressed. Is this even better than the 2016?

Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

Sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Bédines, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is almost 100% Grenache. It has the variety's silky tannins but plenty of them, so hold onto your bottles for a few years until the wine comes into balance. Right now, it's clearly got plenty of concentrated red fruit and peppery spice but comes across tight and crisp.
