Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) has a dense, fruit-driven bouquet that does not possess the detail of Rousseau's Chambertin 2012. Wild strawberry mingles with cranberry and dried orange peel notes that gain intensity in the glass, but not quite the precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, citrus fresh in the mouth with touches of blood orange. Perhaps the true quality of this wine is unveiled because it is far superior than the recalcitrant nose. There is a touch of bitterness on the finish, but that merely lends this Chambertin tension. Extraordinarily long and vital, this was one of the huge surprises of the blind tasting.

There is hint of menthol on the overtly sauvage aromas of mostly cool and earthy red berry fruit. There is fine intensity and plenty of muscle to the almost pungently mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess outstanding persistence on the well-balanced finish. Note however that this is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar as this is very much built for long-term aging. Don't miss!

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on September 7 and made with 50% whole bunch and 40% new oak. It has a very pure, generous bouquet with layers of red cherries, crushed strawberry and cranberry fruit and well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Very lithe and fresh, leading to a delineated finish that ranks alongside many others I have tasted. This is a superb Chambertin that will age with style.

Here there is slightly more wood in evidence but also noticeably more aromatic complexity to the exceptionally spicy nose of ripe plum, earth and slightly animale scents. This is really quite refined for the appellation as the mid-palate is pure silk which disguises somewhat the underlying muscularity of the big-bodied flavors that are blessed with both excellent concentration as well as plenty of palate coating dry extract. This is a powerful but balanced effort that offers genuinely outstanding length and is unapologetically built to age.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Richebourg 2011 has a more extravagant, bold, multilayered bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, hints of undergrowth and light marine influences coming in to play: very complex. The palate still has some unresolved oak on the entry, but there is great tension and vibrancy here, the tannins fine and lending this great tension. I would not broach a bottle now because there is so much to give in the future. Just like in the blind Amoureuses tasting in Holland, here Bichot proves itself as one of the top-flight producers. Bravo!

The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has a pastille-like purity on the nose that gently unfolds in the glass: raspberry preserve, wild strawberry, forest floor and a touch of autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, crisp acidity, quite lithe in the mouth, with an elegant long finish that exudes both the terroir and Pinot Noir. I wonder if this will match the fantastic 2011 once in bottle?

(Outstanding) A markedly spicy and slightly more elegant nose is both quite pretty and floral in character with just a touch of wood toast to the mostly red currant-scented aromas. The ultra-refined, sleek and lacy middle weight flavors that possess a velvety mouthfeel that contrasts with the firm and youthfully austere finally that is very well balanced. This lovely effort should amply reward medium to even longer-term patience.

(Sweet spot Outstanding) Once again the nose is quite restrained while remaining wonderfully elegant and even more floral with its cool and admirably pure aromas of pomegranate, cherry, spiced tea and plenty of violet and lavender nuances. There is outstanding intensity, in fact it's presently almost painful, to the pungently mineral-driven middle weight flavors that display terrific persistence on the youthfully austere and equally chiseled finish. This is impressive though note well that it's very compact and a wine that will require extended patience.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a glorious bouquet, very pure with plenty of black cherries, blueberry, violet and mineral scents. This is beautifully-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, quite caressing in terms of its silky texture but with real backbone behind it. This is one of the standouts from Albert Bichot this vintage.

The 2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Chabiots has an attractive nose marked by scents of morello cherry, wet limestone and almost Alpine-fresh aromas. There is something airy about the aromatics here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, cohesive in the mouth with fine structure on the finish that maintains commendable precision. This will be well worth investigating once in bottle - one of Bichot's more sophisticated offerings in this vintage.
