Clos du Marquis

About Clos du Marquis

Clos du Marquis is one of Bordeaux’s oldest second wines, first produced in 1902. It has been part of the Delon family holdings since then, and is produced by the  same wine-making team, using the same wine-making techniques, as Léoville-Las Cases. Both Las Cases and Clos du Marquis are vinified in the same facility and are matured in 60% new oak before release.

Though Clos du Marquis is produced by illustrious Saint-Julien property, Leoville Las Cases, it is not exactly a 'Second Wine', nor is it a Grand Vin. It is the product of a specific plot on the edge of the Leoville Las Cases estate, bordering on Pauillac and exhibiting excellent and classic Saint-Julien character. Producing firmly structured, age-worthy wines, Clos du Marquis is a complement to the illustrious Delon stable.

Clos du Marquis 2000 (12x75cl)

Wine Spectator (94)

The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It's big and rounded. If you can't afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Léoville Las Cases. So it's like its own estate. Best after 2009. 20,000 cases made. -JS

Clos du Marquis 2005 (12x75cl)

Wine Spectator (92-94)

This is very solid, with currants, minerals and berries on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Lots of licorice and cassis. Tight. Always excellent in top vintages. Score range: 92-94

Clos du Marquis 2016 (12x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95)

From the considerable talents of the Léoville Las Cases team, the 2016 Clos du Marquis is made from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. This full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly elegant Saint Julien has the purity and balance that’s the hallmark of the vintage as well as loads of underlying structure and depth. Great notes of ripe black cherries, blackcurrants, spring flowers, and graphite all emerge from this beauty, which is going to be one for the ages. It will need 8-10 years of cellaring and keep for three decades.
