2007 |
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2007 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18.5)Gentle spice, hint of cigar box and delicate oak spice aromas and something perfumed and almost exotic, a little like sandalwood, opening up to spiced red fruit and candied orange-peel freshness. Already so multi-faceted and open on the nose. Very tangy and finely spiced on the palate too. There’s density and elegant tannic structure but so well dressed in light but fine fruit that you barely see the framework. Fine spicy grip on the long fresh finish. Silky, scented, gorgeous. The most approachable of the 2007 grands crus tasted alongside.

2009 |
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (94)The 2009 Échézeaux Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of wild berries and plums mingled with peonies, exotic spices and hints of wood smoke. Full-bodied, deep and complete, with velvety tannins and an enveloping core of fruit, it's sumptuous but serious, with lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is a concentrated, youthfully muscular Échézeaux that is still a few years away from showing all its cards.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl) Vinous (93-95)Things really take off with the 2010 Echézeaux, which is a meaningful step up from the earlier wines in this tasting. The 2010 surprises for its size and sheer volume. It boasts phenomenal depth and richness in its intense dark red fruit. The sheer energy and vibrancy of the fruit is remarkable. A huge, explosive finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste. This is a great showing from the Echézeaux, even if the 2010 is notably bigger than is typical for this bottling. The Echézeaux was the last fruit to be picked in 2010.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2011 Échézeaux literally jumps from the glass with a heady melange of dark red fruit, sweet floral notes and crushed rocks. Rich and explosive on the palate, yet backed up with significant structure and pure intensity, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. First and foremost, the Échézeaux is a wine of pure texture. The Échézeaux emerges from 7-8 parcels in the Poulallières climat. There is so much to like here.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl) Tim Atkin (96)One of the best Echézeaux I've had from DRC in recent years, with very little to choose between it and the normally superior Grands Echézeaux bottling, this is more deeply coloured than usual. It's spicy and stemmy, with a good core of sweetness, bright acidity and textured fruit.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2015 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was cropped at 30.42hl/ha on 11 and 12 September. It has a glorious bouquet that springs from the glass: Morello cherries, crushed strawberry, crushed stone, just a hint of bay leaf all beautifully defined and with a little more horsepower than the Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry and comes across more saline in the mouth than its “little brother”. There is a pinch of spice that becomes more prominent with aeration and then against my expectations, it becomes understated and quite linear on the finish. One of the more backward 2015s from the domaine this year, I would cellar this for four or five years at least; a Grands Echézeaux that is full of secrets.

2018 |
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very deep hue. The extraordinarily pure bouquet features black cherries intermingling with blueberry and oyster shell, and later a hint of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, edgy and stony, with dark berry fruit and a little spicier than I recall apropos of previous Echézeaux at this stage. It might just need a little length, but otherwise it is a wine determined not to be outshone by its Grand Cru siblings.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Echezeaux Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2019 Echézeaux was picked on 22 and 23 of September at 23hL/ha. Conspicuously deeper in colour than the Corton, this has a fuller bouquet with red cherries, raspberry coulis, traces of tobacco and autumn leaves. The palate is quite succulent on the entry, candid red fruit (raspberry and wild strawberry), hints of marmalade and quince. Perhaps it just misses a little persistence on the finish, my inclination that this Echézeaux will drink early, yet has the substance to provide a couple of decades of drinking pleasure. 871 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2000 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (92)The Grands Echézeaux 2000 is a cerebral Burgundy, not quite as convincing as it was three years ago, but still a great wine. Here it has a vibrant red berry, stony bouquet that is reserved at first, but opens nicely with limestone and sea-spray scents emerging with time. It has a quite brilliant balance on the palate–not a powerful Grands Echézeaux but complex, with hints of black olive and chlorophyll emerging toward the finish that gently fans out and becomes a little spicier as it aerates. Superb.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2005 (6x75cl) Vinous (97)I was blown away by the 2005 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru because though I have tasted it two or three times, never could I envisage that it would reach this level. It has laser-like precision on the nose with more blue fruit than I remember, so much mineralité, as if someone had just ground limestone directly into the wine glass. The palate is exquisitely balanced with filigree tannins framing the pure red fruit, a Pinot Noir with unerring symmetry. It gains weight and depth with aeration, ultimately transforming into a profound wine and one of the best bottles of Grands-Echézeaux that I have tasted from the domaine. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl) Vinous (94+)Dark cherry, plum, cloves and menthol are some of the many notes that wrap around the palate in the 2011 Grands-Échézeaux. This is an especially dark, somber Grands-Échézeaux. Today the tannins are quite firm and the wine is holding back much of its potential, but it possesses superb depth that will only fully emerge after a number of years in the cellar. Sweet tobacco, savory herbs and leather wrap around a finish infused with gravitas.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18.5+)Notably deeper colour. More violets and headier than the Échezeaux. Denser. Floral notes and the skein of freshness runs through this but with great charm and class. Notable acidity on the finish and the tannins are just about hidden. Medium weight fruit. Redcurrants poke through on the finish.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (96)The 2019 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on 19 and 20 of September at 28hL/ha. There is a tangible step up from the Echézeaux in terms of concentration and complexity. The fruit is slightly darker with blackberry and raspberry, wild hedgerow and touches of bay leaf. Beautiful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with lace-like tannins, a beguiling sense of symmetry and poise. More dimension here than the Echézeaux (in fact, its architecture is akin to Richebourg). It fans out wonderfully towards the finish, velvety smooth with a judicious touch of spice lingering on the aftertaste. Bon vin. 884 cases produced. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru 1998 (6x75cl) Burghound (95)Like all of the '98 DRC reds, the clarity is a bit cloudy and not limpid though it does not seem to affect the purity of the aromas that now display some subtle secondary hints on the stunning nose of ripe red and black fruits, oriental spices, tea and leather notes. There is superb intensity to the dense, serious and strikingly complex flavors that are underpinned by ripe tannins and huge length on the balanced, mouth coating and impressively long finish. The personality here is muscular and bold with the ripe acidity framing the flavors and wonderfully focused finale. It's worth pointing out that while this is still on the way up, I was pleasantly surprised at how approachable the '98 LT was even though there is more development potential to realize. Multiple and consistent notes.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru 2000 (6x75cl) Wine Enthusiast (97)Truly glorious and incredibly seductive in the nose, with a complex but also subtle swirl of fruit, herbs and spice. Bold, sleek and velvety on the palate, with a distinct core that is pleasingly redolent of fresh-picked grape stems, but surrounded by ripe raspberry and cherry flavors. It evens out with hints of leather, toast, crème brûlée, rose petals, citrus and toast on the long, lingering finish.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru 2002 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square. It was initially difficult to choose between the 1999 and 2002 La Tâche, but in the end the former just ascended to the stratosphere, while the latter simply cruised, albeit at a very high altitude. Now at 13 years of age, there is just a slight bricking on the rim. It feels a little more forward than the 1999–a stylish and personality-driven bouquet with predominantly red berry fruit interlaced with warm bricks and undergrowth (much more so of the latter compared to the 1999). The palate is beautifully balanced with exquisite tannin, perfect acidity and an effortless, you might say easygoing personality. That is deceptive because it is a complex and utterly harmonious La Tâche that is the epitome of elegance. Unlike the 1999, I would broach this now with an hour's decanting. Wonderful.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (98)The 2009 La Tâche Grand Cru is the most ethereal of the three wines in this flight. Whole cluster influence is especially marked here. A whole range of spice, dried flower, mint and savory overtones infuse the 2009 with layers of nuance. Next to the other wines in this flight, La Tâche is ethereal and harder to fully capture with words, an attribute many, if not most, of the world’s greatest wines share.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (98)The 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru was picked over three days from 16 to 18 of September at 23hL/ha. Like the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, this wine gives you no choice but to sit and contemplate. The bouquet is beautifully-defined, broody and introspective at first, less immediate than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, then after 10 minutes it becomes highly perfumed with potpourri and rose petals, dark berry fruit, perhaps just a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied, extraordinarily well-defined and pure. There is a touch more spice compared to recent vintages, a pinch of white pepper lingers on the tongue for a minute after the wine has exited. There is real structure to this La Tâche and my intuition is that this will close for a period during its long arching evolution in bottle. 994 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 1996 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-96)As is often the case with this youthful wine, the nose was extremely reticent. After considerable coaxing, I had a peek at this offering's deeply ripe dark fruit aromatics. But what a flavor profile! A massive explosion of profound and intense cherries, raspberries, boysenberries, and strawberries coated my palate. It is a medium-to-full-bodied, densely-fruited, and powerful wine that is perfectly balanced and delineated. Projected maturity: 2005-2018.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 1999 (6x75cl) Vinous (99)The 1999 Richebourg is simply majestic. In fact, 1999 may be a year in which the Richebourg is just a bit more complex than the La Tâche. Hoisin, smoke, exotic spices and rich, unctuous fruit flesh out in the glass. The 1999 has more than enough fruit to fill out its big, broad frame. It, too, will drink well for several decades.

High-pitched, pure aromas of red berries, spices and flowers; a bit less "purple" than usual for this cuvee Gentle and rich but not yet focused in the mouth, with a pronounced note of coffee torrefaction. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2005 (6x75cl) Vinous (98+)The 2005 Richebourg makes a strong argument that the answer to that question might be a resounding ‘yes!’ Huge beams of tannin are present but nearly covered by the sheer intensity the fruit. Black cherry, plum, mint, lavender and graphite give the 2005 much of its gravitas. Tonight, the 2005 is insanely beautiful and absolutely stellar, and I say that never having truly fallen for the domaine’s Richebourg. The 2005, though, well, it simply will not be denied.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (97+)I am surprised by how good the 2009 Richebourg is at this stage. Swaths of tannin frame an explosive core of fruit in a Burgundy endowed with a real sense of gravitas. The radiance and ripeness of the year has filled out the wine nicely, yet the 2009 remains a quintessentially powerful, substantial wine that will last decades. Although the 2009 is many years away from peaking, it is a real joy to catch it at this early stage.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl) Vinous (94-96)The 2010 Richebourg is a kaleidoscope of black fruit, graphite, mint, violets and spices. It is a towering, statuesque wine that completely saturates the palate in all directions, seemingly at the same time. The 2010 stands out for its beguiling, totally exquisite aromatics. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru was harvested on the afternoon of October 9 and then the following day at just 16.5 hectoliters per hectare, the second lowest after the Echézeaux. It is clearly the elder brother of the 2013 Romanée-Saint-Vivant with intense dark cherry, black plum, tayberry and crushed violet aromas (the latter, perhaps a nod to the Romanée-Saint-Vivant). As with all the domaine's wines this year, it is beautifully defined with beguiling transparency. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is serious weight and presence here. It is struck through with sorbet-like freshness, hints of blood orange tincturing the vibrant red fruit, seguing into a finish with great conviction and confidence, a Richebourg self-aware though not preening about its status. This is a Richebourg to cellar for several years and to enjoy over the next 20 to 25 years (or more). Production is 551 cases. Tasted February 2016.
