Domaine de la Mordoree

Domaine de la Mordoree has been around since 1986, in the village of Tavel. Perhaps best known for their Lirac and Chateauneuf du Papes, they also make a range of Tavel Rosés which Robert Parker has referred to as some of the “best Rosé in any given vintage” – praise indeed, given the highly fêted examples coming out of Provence. Tavel is located just across the river from Chateauneuf du Pape, it produces serious rose wines based on Grenache and Cinsault, with Syrah and Mourvedre making an appearance as well.

Domaine de la Mordoree Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reine des Bois 2005 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The Delorme Brother’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has been incredibly consistent for me, and is always an upper-90s scoring wine. A big, full-bodied, structured effort, its inky purple color is followed by a terrific bouquet of ripe black fruits, toasted spice, graphite, chocolate and garrigue. Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and the rest 5% Vaccarèse, brought up 30% in barrels and 70% in stainless steel, it will have another 10-15 years of prime drinking.

A blockbuster-styled effort, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de La Reine des Bois doesn’t pull any punches and gives up rocking aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cassis, graphite, spice-box, lavender and herbs. Possessing full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and thrilling purity, it can be enjoyed now for its exuberant character, but will also evolve gracefully going forward.

One of the blockbusters in the vintage, the inky-colored 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois – 80% Grenache, completely destemmed and aged 12 months in 80% stainless steel and 20% old barrels – offers fantastic richness and depth in its blackberry liqueur, graphite, wood smoke and crushed-rock-like aromas and flavors. An elegant, stylish and polished example of this cuvée, it comes closest in my mind to a lighter-weight 2010. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with fine tannin, it will drink well for 10-15 years.

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The inky colored 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Reine des Bois is a match for the otherworldly 2001 and is a magical wine that couldn’t be any better. Based on 75% Grenache and the balance Mourvèdre, Syrah, Vaccarèse, and Counoise, raised in tank and neutral barrels, its inky black color is followed by an awesome perfume of blackberries, smoked earth/charcoal, licorice, graphite, and garrigue. Deep, full-bodied, with a huge mid-palate, a seamless texture, and serious tannins, it has the purity as well as depth that makes this vintage so compelling. This modern-day legend needs 3-4 years of cellaring and is capable of lasting for 15-20 years.

Vinous (90)

Opaque ruby. Black raspberry, cherry-cola and licorice on the pungent, expressive nose. Sappy, precise dark fruit flavors are lifted by suave floral and spice qualities and pick up smokiness with air. Shows very good heft and power on the finish, which leaves notes of candied dark fruit and smoke behind. Displays the richness of the vintage but doesn't come off as burly.

Domaine de la Mordoree Lirac La Dame Rousse 2011 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

The 2011 Lirac La Dame Rousse is an equal blend of Grenache and Syrah. This vintage is more evolved and softer than 2012, so readers looking for immediate gratification will prefer the 2011. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by plenty of garrigue, lavender, black currant, cherry and underbrush characteristics. This spicy, fleshy, well-made wine delivers lots of fruit, body and character. Enjoy it over the next several years.
