    Comte Liger-Belair

Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard.  Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Good medium red. Subtly complex nose offers cherry, raspberry and minerals. Delivers the sweet fruit of 2007 in spades, with a slightly high-toned quality that adds to its sex appeal (all these 2007s have volatile acidity levels around 0.6, according to Liger-Belair, which helps to explain their expressiveness.) Fat and sexy wine, with a complicating saline nuance. Finishes with sweet tannins and superb length.

A wine of considerable inner tension, the 2008 Liger-Belair Échézeaux (magnum) presents a compelling dynamic of push and pull between all of the elements that are alive in the glass. Floral, savory aromatics meld into a core of intensely perfumed, powerful fruit, all supported by veins of underlying salinity that add cut. A deep, dense, powerful wine, the 2008 Échézeaux is utterly sublime in so many ways. This is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. 95

Good ruby-red. Wilder on the nose than the Reignots, offering very ripe scents of plum, dark chocolate, brown spices and game. Then big, rich and chocolatey in the mouth, a bit in the style of its 2015 sibling but quite backward and hard to judge today. I get the feeling that this wine is painfully young but I'd be more confident about its ability to reward long cellaring if it showed more of the berry intensity of the other 2014 crus I tasted at this address.

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is slightly darker in color than its peers. There is a fug of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit profile difficult to discern. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite masculine and surly in style, although there is impressive substance and grip on the finish. This is in an awkward stage, but I’m convinced it will coalesce and become much more coherent with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

(two-thirds Les Cruots and one-third Les Champs Traversins, with both climats losing about 35% of their fruit to frost): Healthy dark red, but not ruby like the Clos Vougeot and Reignots. Lovely subtle carnal perfume to the aromas of raspberry, smoke and mocha. Ripe, sweet and wonderfully refined on the palate; a bit less black fruit in character than most of this estate's other 2016, and nicely leavened by spicy oak and a floral element. Spreads out horizontally and vibrates on the back end, finishing with a late note of dark cherry and subtle floral lift. Classically dry, classy Echézeaux with outstanding potential. (Liger-Belair did not bother to present his Vosne-Romanée Les Brûlées, as he made just a single barrel in 2016.)

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a precocious, exuberant nose with vibrant red fruit intermixed with orange pith, potpourri and dried herbs - complex and very well delineated. The oak is seamlessly integrated both here and on the palate. It is finely sculpted, fresh and almost minty in character for a period, before the finish delivers quite intense blood orange infused red fruit on the finish. Real pedigree here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Saturated, dark ruby-red. Multidimensional nose reads like a textbook of Burgundy: black raspberry, blackberry, smoked meat, underbrush, game and minerals. Incredibly sweet, pure flavors of wild dark berries, given almost painful cut by pungent minerality and brisk acidity. The explosive, mounting finish stains the tongue with flavor, leaving behind a vibrating perfume. These vines run north-south, which no doubt helped this 2005 maintain exceptional vibrancy for the vintage. Likely to be a cellar treasure.

The 2016 La Romanée Grand Cru has a lilting bouquet of crushed strawberry and red cherry on the nose, perhaps missing the ambitions and the complexity of the very best vintages that I have tasted over the years. That said, it is very pretty and more open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It gains complexity with aeration and reveals its hidden mineralité, becoming spicy and slightly peppery towards the finish. Excellent, although I would not place it top of the class. The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins. This is full of energy and tension and finishes amazingly long and reassuringly luxuriant. Utterly sublime, and it surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 La Romanée Grand Cru shows quite a bit of new oak on the nose at the moment and this slightly obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, beautifully structured, silky-smooth with palpable energy, tension and precision towards the finish. The aromatics might be entering a dumb phase, but the palate evidences a Grand Cru with serious ambition. This is an ethereal La Romanée that seems to care little for the summer heat of that year and just goes about its job. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Dark red-ruby. Musky, very ripe, soil-driven scents of black raspberry, black cherry and menthol. Silky and fine-grained yet backward today owing to its medicinal reserve. This wine is hiding its sweetness in the early going but it displays lovely phenolic ripeness, not to mention good energy. I'd give it at least three or four years in the cellar.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Cras 1er Cru has quite a heavily reduced nose with a touch of Wellington boot. Don't worry about that - it just needs time. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry, raspberry and tobacco scents. I think it should pull through with time. (10% vendange entier Deep ruby-red. Wild black raspberry, violet, crushed rock, mint and pepper, plus a whiff of chocolatey ripeness. Powerful, dense and sappy on entry, then superripe but bright in the middle, with a strong limestone quality that really tickles the taste buds. Finishes very long and vibrant, with terrific lift for the year. This cuvee has been especially impressive since the 2008 vintage.

Bright red-ruby. Aromas of black raspberry and pungent minerality show a deep note of coffee reduction. Large-scaled, dry and classic, and quite backward and uncompromising today, with flavors of dark berries, smoke and crushed rock saturating the palate. Dusty tannins spread out horizontally on the vibrating, stony back end. Here's another 2016 that will require patience. Superb potential.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has a lot of fruit on the nose (mulberry, red plums and crushed strawberry) and comes across plush and quite oaky, with a little reduction to address. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. The oak may well be absorbed with age, allowing the fruit to shine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has another rather reduced bouquet, but there is plenty of red fruit here, touches of blood orange and hints of violet and after 20 minutes there is a palpable sense of exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy with fine grip and backbone. Fresh and delineated on the finish, this is a lovely Vosne-Romanée that should age well in bottle. The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Petits Monts comes across as rich, deep and very powerful. It boasts tons of energy and sheer texture. Sweet notes of tobacco, licorice, menthol and crushed flowers come together in the glass. Ultimately structure prevails in defining the wine’s personality. This is going to be a fun wine to taste in a few years, once the tannins have softened a bit. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

Served by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair from double magnum, the 2006 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru sports a gorgeous, black cherry, sous-bois and white pepper bouquet that still feels youthful (perhaps because of the large format and provenance.) The palate is structured with fine grip, overflowing with vim and vigour. The tannins mellow towards the finish but there remains tremendous weight and sumptuousness here. Excellent. The Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is quite round and supple in this vintage. Dark red and black stone fruits and a general bold overall profile are the main signatures, but at the same time there is quite a bit of underlying structure in support. The Suchots is always one of the flashier wines here, as it is again in 2013.

(20% of this fruit comes from the top of the slope, which Liger-Belair says brings limestone freshness): Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, roast coffee and smoke on the nose. Dense and round, offering a velvety texture and good stuffing for village wine. Very ripe but nicely leavened by smoky minerality. In a softer style, finishing with ripe tannins. This is almost ready to be racked; indeed, Liger-Belair planned to bottle it before Christmas.

(bottled in November of 2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Inviting aromas of strawberry, mocha and iron; another register entirely after the dark, floral 2016s here. Fat, ripe and plush but dry, conveying complex soil tones to its fleshy flavors of red raspberry and mocha. Finishes slightly warm, with very good subtle length and no rough edges. Nothing reached 14% alcohol in 2015, Liger-Belair assured me.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru was showing just a small reduction on the nose, but that is shaken off with some aeration to reveal intense dark plum and citrus fruit plus touches of blood orange. The palate is velvety-smooth with finely pitched acidity and good tension. Quite sappy toward the finish, with the structure and persistence one expects from such a noble Premier Cru. Superb.

Good deep red. Ripe, complex, slightly reduced aromas of plum, currant, cherry and smoke. Silky and vibrant, with lovely lift to the flavors of red fruits and dried rose. Finishes very long and bright, but distinctly firmer than the preceding village wines. This seems to be shutting down in bottle today.

Excellent. Tasted at La Paulée in Beaune.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a voluminous, intense, slightly feral bouquet featuring layers of red berry fruit and possibly just a touch of brettanomyces (which for me does not detract from the overall aromatic profile). The well-focused, medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a crisp line of acidity and sappy blueberry and wild strawberry scents toward the sleek, silky-smooth finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Villages has impressive volume on the nose with wild strawberry and a slight confit note that is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, elegant and pure, and there is a fine line of acidity with quite a dense finish. This is very fine.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château feels a little smudged by comparison to the La Colombière, offering scents of dark berry fruit plus wilted iris flowers and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of rich blueberry and black fruit and fine salinity toward the finish. This exhibits excellent length but it will require 2–4 years in bottle.
