    Comte Liger-Belair

Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard.  Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

    Vinous (92)

Good medium red. Subtly complex nose offers cherry, raspberry and minerals. Delivers the sweet fruit of 2007 in spades, with a slightly high-toned quality that adds to its sex appeal (all these 2007s have volatile acidity levels around 0.6, according to Liger-Belair, which helps to explain their expressiveness.) Fat and sexy wine, with a complicating saline nuance. Finishes with sweet tannins and superb length.

    Vinous (95)

A wine of considerable inner tension, the 2008 Liger-Belair Échézeaux (magnum) presents a compelling dynamic of push and pull between all of the elements that are alive in the glass. Floral, savory aromatics meld into a core of intensely perfumed, powerful fruit, all supported by veins of underlying salinity that add cut. A deep, dense, powerful wine, the 2008 Échézeaux is utterly sublime in so many ways. This is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. 95

Dark red-ruby. Musky, very ripe, soil-driven scents of black raspberry, black cherry and menthol. Silky and fine-grained yet backward today owing to its medicinal reserve. This wine is hiding its sweetness in the early going but it displays lovely phenolic ripeness, not to mention good energy. I'd give it at least three or four years in the cellar.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2012 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras comes sprinting out of the blocks with macerated black cherries, blueberry and raspberry fruit interlaced with sous-bois and woodland scents. I appreciate the joie-de-vivre expressed in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with some new oak to be fully subsumed, but there is impressive substance here with a spicy tang on the long finish. This has no intention of growing up to be a subtle wine - and it is all the better for it. Tasted June 2015.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

(10% vendange entier Deep ruby-red. Wild black raspberry, violet, crushed rock, mint and pepper, plus a whiff of chocolatey ripeness. Powerful, dense and sappy on entry, then superripe but bright in the middle, with a strong limestone quality that really tickles the taste buds. Finishes very long and vibrant, with terrific lift for the year. This cuvee has been especially impressive since the 2008 vintage.

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Petits Monts comes across as rich, deep and very powerful. It boasts tons of energy and sheer texture. Sweet notes of tobacco, licorice, menthol and crushed flowers come together in the glass. Ultimately structure prevails in defining the wine’s personality. This is going to be a fun wine to taste in a few years, once the tannins have softened a bit. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Villages has impressive volume on the nose with wild strawberry and a slight confit note that is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, elegant and pure, and there is a fine line of acidity with quite a dense finish. This is very fine.

    Vinous (88-90)

(20% of this fruit comes from the top of the slope, which Liger-Belair says brings limestone freshness): Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, roast coffee and smoke on the nose. Dense and round, offering a velvety texture and good stuffing for village wine. Very ripe but nicely leavened by smoky minerality. In a softer style, finishing with ripe tannins. This is almost ready to be racked; indeed, Liger-Belair planned to bottle it before Christmas.

    Vinous (89)

(bottled in November of 2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Inviting aromas of strawberry, mocha and iron; another register entirely after the dark, floral 2016s here. Fat, ripe and plush but dry, conveying complex soil tones to its fleshy flavors of red raspberry and mocha. Finishes slightly warm, with very good subtle length and no rough edges. Nothing reached 14% alcohol in 2015, Liger-Belair assured me.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière shakes off a little reduction to reveal slightly earthy red berry fruit laced with clove and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a fine line of acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, with a taut, linear finish. Good potential for one of the domaine's entry-level cuvées.
