Comte Liger-Belair
Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard. Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Incredibly sweet, pure flavors of wild dark berries, given almost painful cut by pungent minerality and brisk acidity. The explosive, mounting finish stains the tongue with flavor, leaving behind a vibrating perfume. These vines run north-south, which no doubt helped this 2005 maintain exceptional vibrancy for the vintage. Likely to be a cellar treasure. |

Burghound (95)An exceptionally fresh and bright nose is complex, refined and sophisticated still as it just exudes class and breed with a fantastically broad array of spicy and pure cool red and black fruit aromas. The spice elements are also reflected by the minerally, serious and delicious medium full-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the moderately firm finish that is supported by buried tannins and huge length that doesn't stop. In the realm of being extremely picky there is a hint of backend warmth present but it's not enough to seriously affect the balance. Great stuff that is very much still on the way up yet it's not so backward that it could not be enjoyed now if decanted for 30 minutes or so first. Tasted several times in the last few years with consistent results. |

Vinous (97)The 2016 La Romanée Grand Cru has a lilting bouquet of crushed strawberry and red cherry on the nose, perhaps missing the ambitions and the complexity of the very best vintages that I have tasted over the years. That said, it is very pretty and more open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It gains complexity with aeration and reveals its hidden mineralité, becoming spicy and slightly peppery towards the finish. Excellent, although I would not place it top of the class. Vinous (98)The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins. This is full of energy and tension and finishes amazingly long and reassuringly luxuriant. Utterly sublime, and it surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. |

Burghound (98)A gorgeously spiced nose is also quite exotic and could be from nowhere else but Vosne. The impressively concentrated and intense larger-scaled flavors possess excellent size, weight and volume along with a gorgeous texture while exuding both a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume and ample minerality on the youthfully austere and massively persistent finish that is the epitome of power without weight. This too is absolutely magnificent. |
