    Faiveley

The historic Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's leading domaines. There is no doubt that in the last decade, under the guidance of Erwan Faiveley and winemaker Jérôme Flous, they have undergone a renaissance of style, shedding their old-school, austere reds for elegant, beautifully finessed wines.

Domaine Faiveley owns holdings in many of Burgundy’s most revered vineyards in the Côte de Nuits (Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, etc.) and in the Côte de Beaune (Corton-Charlemagne, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard, etc.) with some of these being monopoles under single ownership.

Although armed with an incredible variety of vineyards, Faiveley also have their extraordinary heritage and experience as an advantage over their local rivals. No less than seven generations of Faiveleys have succeeded each other in running the domaine since it was founded in 1825.

Medium red. Strawberry liqueur, dried rose and peppery herbs on the nose. Silky in texture but a bit backward and medicinal, even rustic, offering cranberry, spice and herb flavors and a slight peppery greenness. I find this a bit herbal and shallow for grand cru. Needs time but will it blossom and fill out? Nicely delineated and aromatic but lacks the depth and full ripeness of the best wines here in 2014. This parcel located just below Chambertin is part of Faiveley's acquisition of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a single hectare that came from Faiveley’s purchase of Dupont-Tisserandot. The parcels lie right across the road from Chambertin, and the vines are around 70 years old, although they were due to be pulled up the week after my visit, since they are becoming unproductive. This has a slightly smudged, floral bouquet that gains clarity with aeration, but does not quite have the delineation of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and good grip, quite Mazoyères-like in terms of structure, and an attractive spicy finish. It maybe just lacks the finesse of the very finest Charmes-Chambertins.

The 2017 Echézeaux En Orveau comes from a cool microclimate, the last before you reach Musigny, though here the vines face south rather than east on shallow soils. This has a pleasant bouquet, initially quite bashful but gaining intensity in the glass, with crushed stone infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, offering sappy red berry fruit, orange peel and a touch of marmalade, and quite grippy toward the back palate. A touch of allspice features on the aftertaste. This should drink nicely over the next two decades. A well-crafted, burly Echézeaux.

An extraordinary wine, even for this very special Grand Cru. So mineral and pure with a gigantic concentration of sour cherries. The extremely fine and racy finish lifts off towards the heavens. You could drink it on release, but this has enormous aging potential. Try to wait until 2023.

Good full red. Scented aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, menthol and herbs (some stems were used here) are rather cool for the year and a bit forbidding. Supple on entry, then quite tight in the middle palate, with dark berry, crushed cherry, spice and menthol flavors leading to a firmly tannic, slightly dusty finish. Showing little obvious sweetness today, this youthfully tough wine is in need of patience.

Bright light yellow. Ripe yellow stone fruits are complicated by apple and pear, with a spicy note emerging with aeration. Supple and quite dry, combining a hint of green apple and salty minerality. Much less about primary fruit than the nose suggests, and even a touch sour today and in need of patience. A more classic style than the Meursault Charmes, but not quite as pristine as a sample I tried from barrel a year ago.

Barrel sample. More obvious citrus and creamy oatmeal on the nose than on the Bienvenues, less stony. More obvious oak. Sinewy and fresh on the palate, tense rather than rich, tight and long. Chewy texture on the finish combined with lovely freshness and length.

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru conveys much more terroir expression on the nose, offering chalk dust and wet limestone aromas; great intensity here. The taut, fresh palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a mineral-driven finish and commendable persistence. This is a step above the Bienvenues this year and it should age with style. Bon vin!

This is an about-face from the Bienvenue-B tard-Montrachet. It is unapologetically creamy and sumptuous with a near gluttonous concentration of lushly ripe orchard fruit accompanied by cinnamon dusted banana bread. Yet, there is a strong current of bustling acidity providing refreshment. These vines were planted in 1985 and 1997 and purchased by Faiveley in 2008. 2025-40

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Ecu from Domaine Faiveley needs some aeration to shake off some light reduction, opening in the glass with pretty notes of black raspberry, rich soil and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, sappy and succulent, with an ample chassis of fine tannins and a deep core of fruit, incipiently lavish but with good focus too. This will need some time in bottle to open up, but it is a promising Beaune 1er cru.

The 2017 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from a parcel acquired in 2008, a half-hectare parcel of around 13 long rows that stretches from the top to the bottom of the Grand Cru and actually continues into the Bâtard-Montachet. This has a well-defined, wet limestone-scented bouquet that feels very focused. The balanced palate displays neatly integrated oak (although there is now no new wood) and a tender, effervescent, sherbet-tinged finish. Excellent.

In fact, if you just imagine a neon plus sign, that probably expresses the aromatics better than anything else. Happy at its survival after the frost? A pure bench of fresh white fruit, actually this is more about nuances than power, though it maintains energy all the way through, to a fine long finish.
