Joseph Roty
An augmentation of Domaine Joseph and Philipe Roty, they are not swayed by current trends. They do not sell their wine until it is bottled so they are always a vintage behind the market. Joseph had a cult following amongst Burgundy fans and he has passed his style of rich powerful wines onto his son.

Wine Advocate (96)The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Pierre-Jean Roty compares it to the 2012 and 2009 renditions, which readers who follow this domaine will know is high praise indeed. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru offers intense black and red fruit, woodland, black truffle and dried blood notes on the nose (almost like andouillette). The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of new oak to be subsumed, which is always the way with this cuvée, but it is counterbalanced by fine acidity. Liberally sprinkled white pepper and clove toward the persistent finish. Excellent. |

Wine Advocate (97)Aromas of ripe cherries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, anise, sweet spices, dark chocolate and peonies introduce the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's rich and velvety, with a broad-shouldered, textural profile and a long, resonant finish. Framed by beautifully ripe, powdery tannins, it's an especially sensual rendition of this perennially great wine. |

Wine Advocate (97+)There were only seven barrels of the superb 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, as the Roty family's ancient vines yielded a mere 18 hectoliters per hectare. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and plums mingled with licorice, sweet spices, violets and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with huge concentration, velvety tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. This monument in the making will require a decade's patience, and prove essentially immortal thereafter. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru has a very tight bouquet at the moment, offering a little leather and game and sufficient red fruit intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, orange peel, white pepper and clove and hints of pain d’épices toward the focused, persistent finish. Very fine. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel. It possesses quite a complex bouquet of violet-infused black fruit and a light marine influence (shucked oyster shells). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy black cherry and mineral-rich blueberry fruit, fine backbone and a very saline finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru was quite closed and reticent on the nose from barrel, touches of cassis and violet petal eventually unfurling, though it remained broody. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and vibrant. The velvety-textured finish is very caressing. Pure and focused, with a surfeit of energy, this is a superb Premier Cru from Roty. |

Vinous (94)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru is perfumed and floral, with plenty of black cherries, cassis fruit infused by violet and iris flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, beautifully balanced, silky smooth on the finish with great persistency. Superb. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has more fruit intensity than the Mazis-Chambertin (though maybe not quite the same delineation), offering dark berries, sous-bois, and a hint of dried blood and game that surfaces with time. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, real vibrancy and delineation, marmalade-infused red berry fruit and a peppery aftertaste. It does not quite reach the level I expected from barrel, but remains a great Griottes. |

Vinous (95)The 2018 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more open bouquet than the Mazis-Chambertin, offering nicely focused blackberry, briar and pencil box aromas and good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and zesty, with fine tannins and blood orange infusing the blue fruit on the persistent finish. Superb, though it needs several years in the cellar. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the one cuvée that flirted with excessive ripeness on the nose, revealing figgy aromas filtering through the black fruit and just missing the delineation of the Fonteny. The palate is balanced, though, and velvety-smooth; here there is less sign of the overripeness. In fact, the finish shows impressive clarity and refinement. Hopefully time in bottle will address the sur-maturité, so cellar this for several years. |

Vinous (94)The 2020 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with violet and incense infusing the intense black and blueberry fruit, touches of liquorice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, very well integrated oak, lots of panache here with a sweet spicy, pain d'épices finish. Very long. Not a subtle Griottes but one to cellar down for several years (at least). |

Vinous (94)The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is very well defined on the nose, which features detailed raspberry, dark cherry and crushed stone aromas; subtle rose petal scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fresh and vibrant on the entry. Apricot and marmalade notes appear toward the finish. It does cut away a little swiftly on the aftertaste and as such, like the Griottes-Chambertin, it does not quite match my expectations from barrel. |

Vinous (94)The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose, featuring graphite-infused black fruit laced with aromas of Christmas cake and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and some vanilla-y new oak on the finish that will require several years to be fully subsumed. Very good length but patience required. |

Vinous (95)The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly animally nose at first, but it soon shakes off its feral element to reveal cassis and boysenberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, liquorice-infused black fruit with blood orange towards the confit finish. This should age well over the next 20 years. |
