    Leflaive

    About Domaine Leflaive

The single most famous and enormously respected estate in Puligny-Montrachet, there have been members of the Leflaive clan dabbling in vinous affairs in the area since 1717 – the true founder of the current domaine as we know it, however, was Joseph Leflaive (1970-1953). The great man’s sons did an admirable job of expanding their vineyard holdings, as well as building the foundations of the fearsome reputation this Burgundian legend enjoys to this day.

It was under the visionary and transformative stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking the reins in 1990, that this mythical domaine became a leader of Burgundy’s now-ubiquitous biodynamic movement, with the entire estate converting to fully biodynamic as early as 1997! The tragic and untimely death of Anne-Claude in 2015 saw general management pass to Eric Remy, who is doing an admirable job of honouring the legacy of the great woman.

    Viniculture

Domaine Leflaive is one of the largest holders of Grands and 1er Crus in the appellation, with 22 hectares in total of which no fewer than 5 are Grands Crus. One would be hard pressed to find any domaine with finer plots at their disposal, and it is most fortunate that the Leflaive family are true masters at expressing every ounce of sublime minerality, personality and vitality from these exceptional terroirs.

Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

This intense white exhibits lemon, apple and honeydew melon flavors over a backbone of crackling acidity. Linear and persistent, this has an extra dimension, resonating on the long aftertaste of spice and mineral. Best from 2020 through 2032.

5-Star Wine Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet also takes time to emerge, then shows a little more power than the Bienvenues. The oak is a fraction more present but still superbly integrated. The taffeta texture could not possibly have more tensile strength, with an exemplary purity of fruit. To have so much power (not in an alcoholic sense) and yet so much grape. Little light fresh apple notes to finish. Tasted: May 2022

(Don't Miss!) Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren't quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it's almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required.

Things go up a notch or two with the 2010 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, which appears to hover on the palate with the grace of a ballerina. The Bienvenues is all about weightless elegance and implied structure, but it is all there in the glass. At times a bit intellectual, the Bienvenues is nevertheless immensely appealing. Layers of soft, perfumed fruit flow effortlessly to the nuanced, feminine finish. A hint of floral honey and almonds lingers on the palate. I can’t wait to see how this ages. Anticipated maturity: 2020+.

A class act in every way, this benefits from the lower alchols of the vintage, as it did in 2007. It's a powerful wine, but it's harmonious at the same time. Smoky and richly textured, with attractive cinnamon oak, sappy acidity and a nuanced minerally finish.

5-Star Wine An elegant lemon and lime colour. The nose is very precise, a masterpiece of elegance, not giving too much up front. The oak is entirely integrated. A little bit of fresh fennel, otherwise pure white fruit. Then the concentration builds to the back, a slight youthful bitterness, all in all a discreet wine with enormous power to build subsequently. Tasted: May 2022

(Don't Miss!) A trace of reduction isn't sufficient to materially reduce the appeal of the honeysuckle, citrus confit and softly spiced aromas that are also trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The medium-bodied flavors aren't necessarily finer than those of the Pucelles though they do possess more power and weight while retaining a beguilingly silky texture as well as excellent complexity on the strikingly long, balanced and Zen-like finale. This is a very serious and moderately austere BBM that is very clearly built to repay long-term keeping. In a word, superb.

Situated above Le Montrachet and often rivalling it in bottle, this is a superb release from Domaine Leflaive that is one of the white wines of the vintage. Rich, yet floral, it's a remarkably dense, multi-layered wine that's more focused than the Bâtard. Ethereal and graceful, it offers flavours of orange peel, white peach and vanilla oak, underpinned by a chalky, tangy bite.

Like the Puligny villages the expressive nose plays right on the edge of exoticism with its dried yellow orchard fruit elements that add breadth if not necessarily elegance to the citrus, floral, spice and discreet herbal tea nuances. There is absolutely stunning intensity to the ultra-precise and stony flavors that are akin to rolling small rocks around in the mouth, all wrapped in a saline and kaleidoscopically complex finish that reminds me a great deal of a grand cru Chablis with its compact and linear finish. This is breathtakingly good though note well that it's going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar as this is nowhere near ready and I very much doubt that it will be young.

The 2015 Chevalier-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive is stunning from bottle, wafting from the glass with a lovely nose of lemon pith, wet stones, spring flowers and toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with extraordinary intensity and mid-palate depth, a long, lingering finish and an effortless sense of cohesion and completeness. But what's especially impressive about this Chevalier is its grace and textural elegance in this vintage: while its concentration and amplitude certainly reflect the year, nothing is out of place. A step up over even the superb Bâtard-Montrachet and one of the high points of the 2015 vintage in white Burgundy.

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru needed a little encouragement from the glass. Eventually it reveals captivating scents of honeysuckle, petrichor and pressed yellow flowers, an underlying spiciness that comes through with aeration. The palate has a beguiling symmetry from the start: a killer line of acidity counterbalancing the intensity of this Chevalier, gentle grip towards the spicy and "flowing" finish. The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 1er Cru has a delineated and tightly coiled nose with crushed stone-infused green apple, rather fresh considering the growing season, with hints of grass clipping. (Sweet Spot Outstanding) Here the reduction is sufficient to overshadow the fruit. There is even better volume to the sleek and delicious middleweight flavors that are less mineral-driven but more powerful and slightly more persistent and bone-dry finish that is also exceptionally well-balanced. This is excellent and I would go so far as to observe that it's the best vintage for the Clavoillon in a long time. It is typically considered to be less interesting than the other 1ers (and not without reason) in the Leflaive portfolio and while it doesn't surpass them in 2021, it is most impressive nonetheless.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru does not quite convey the same degree of energy as its peers. Flint and green apple notes gradually unfurl; maybe this is just more backward? The palate is definitely backward and yet there is a lot of weight in the mouth. It initially feels a little clammed shut on the finish, but there is a long, spicy aftertaste and impressive precision. This is a surly Pucelles that will require cellaring but there is clearly quality here. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

5-Star Wine Just bottled at the end of April. Made from the usual six plots. A pale lemon yellow. The nose has been knocked back a bit and is not yet showing much fruit. Then a little white fruit starts to emerge with some graphite, and a little bit of gunflint. Racy yet ripe with several layers of flavour and excellent length, the acidity perfectly wound in. On the assumption that the bouquet comes back as it should a little later on, after getting over the bottling, this will surely be a 5 star wine

There is borderline painful intensity to the appealingly textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality, chiseled, balanced and long finish that is quite dry but not really austere. This is an excellent Puligny villages that is also worth strong consideration.

(Outstanding) An elegant, pure and more floral nose offers up its combination of green apple, prominent citrus and crushed fennel nuances. There is borderline painful intensity to the appealingly textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality, chiseled, balanced and long finish that is quite dry but not really austere. This is an excellent Puligny villages that is also worth strong consideration.
