    Egly Ouriet

The owner Francis Egly is considered one of the most conscientious and skilled vigerons in Champagne. He avoids the common practice of high yields and blending to produce a house style. Instead his environmental practices, such as ‘green harvesting’ produce champagne that is terroir expressive.

A blend of the 2015 and 2014 vintages, Egly's emblematic NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Crayères was disgorged this year with only one gram per liter dosage. Bursting with aromas of mirabelle plum, Anjou pear and green apple mingled with notions of freshly baked bread, honeycomb and praline, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, its satiny attack segueing into a deep, layered mid-palate of striking texture and concentration. Concluding with a long, intensely saline finish, it's another brilliant wine from a great producer at the top of his form.

      Wine Advocate (99)

The 2002 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is spectacular today, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of smoky pear, lemon, mandarin orange and peach mingled with smoke, praline, crushed mint and hints of wet chalk. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and strikingly complete, with a textural attack that segues into a concentrated core framed by a vibrant spine of acidity and buttressed by chalky extract. Long and penetrating, this is one of the finest vintages Francis Egly has produced to date.

    • Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Millesime 2005 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90)

The 2005 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is soft, forward and quite expressive. There is plenty of freshness in the glass, but the wine's mid-weight personality and overall lack of complexity vis-à-vis the best wines here both make me think it is a wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. The lithe, delicate finish is attractive, if a bit out of character for Egly-Ouriet, where the wines are usually richer. Candied lemon, dried apricot, white flowers and mint are some of the signatures. Disgorged: July 2014.

The 2006 Millésime Grand Cru is sourced from old vines in Ambonnay. Vinification and aging in oak shape the wine to a considerable degree, but Ambonnay has the natural breadth and shoulders to handle the oak. Brioche, spice, vanillin, dried orchard fruit and herbs all develop nicely in the glass. The 2006 is rich and resonant to the core, yet also impeccable in its overall balance. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2015.

    • Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Millesime 2008 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (100)

Francis Egly and I tasted a bottle trial disgorgement of the 2008 Brut Grand Cru Millésime that saw six grams per liter dosage, and the wine surpassed even my high expectations. Wafting from the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, Meyer lemon, praline, warm bread and walnuts, it's full-bodied, deep and multi-dimensional, with an immensely layered, concentrated core that cloaks its racy but ripe spine of acidity, abundant but refined structuring dry extract and an incredibly long, precise and sapid finish. It represents the confluence of a great vigneron at the peak of his powers with a historic vintage, and it's unquestionably the finest 2008 Champagne that I've tasted to date. Egly and I agreed that it might be even better with only five grams per liter dosage, but we'll see what he finally decides when he disgorges the wine later this year. What is clear is that the the 2008 Brut Grand Cru Millésime will be worth any and every effort to seek out once it arrives on the market.

This bottle of the 2009 Brut Grand Cru Millésime was disgorged in July 2018 after 96 months on the lees, and it's already showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of smoky red berries, green apple, oyster shell and English walnuts, with a faint hint of fino sherry on the upper register. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with searing concentration, a beautifully refined mousse, brisk acids and a long, indeed seemingly endless, finish. Wine Advocate (100)

Francis Egly has produced another profound Champagne with the 2013 Brut Grand Cru Millésime. If the monumental 2008 stands out for its power, structure and intensity, the 2013 is distinguished by its harmony, finesse and completeness; both vintages are very great wines but thus quite different in style. Wafting from the glass with scents of Anjou pear, crisp yellow apple, freshly baked bread, clear honey, iodine and fresh mint, it's full-bodied, ample and pillowy, with a layered, concentrated and effortlessly balanced core of fruit, uniting precision and sensuality to compelling effect. Girdled by racy acids and animated by a delicate pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. Is this the most elegant wine Egly has produced to date? It's certainly among the most compelling that this high quality but initially underrated Champagne vintage has delivered.

The NV Brut Rose Grand Cru is made from vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzy. • Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Millesime 2014 (6x75cl)
    • Egly-Ouriet Brut Rose Grand Cru NV (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate - Robert Parker (93)

The NV Brut Rose Grand Cru is made from vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzy. This is another totally convincing wine from Egly-Ouriet, not to mention one of the strongest wines in the line-up. The Rose Grand Cru captivates for its gorgeous, fragrant fruit and silky, refined finish. It is a jewel of a wine.

    • Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition NV (6x75cl)

      Jancis Robinson (17)

A bit of apple peel. Very ‘natural’. Very pure and unadorned. All top Montagne de Reims villages. Extreme champagne. Very dry finish. Lots of potential.

    • Egly-Ouriet Les Premices Brut NV (6x75cl)
    • Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Vrigny 1er Cru Brut NV (6x75cl)

      Vinous (94)

The NV Vieilles Vignes de Vrigny (Meunier) is one of the best vintages of this cuvée I can remember tasting. Bright and finely cut, the Vieilles Vignes sizzles with tension from start to finish. Dried pear, spice, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all race out of the glass. Meunier has rarely been so refined, so nuanced. Give this a year or two to unwind. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: September, 2022.

    • Egly-Ouriet Vieillissement Prolonge Extra Brut Grand Cru NV (6x75cl)

      Vinous (96)

The NV Extra Brut V.P. Grand Cru (Vieillissement Prolongé) is a rich, textured Champagne that expresses all of the natural intensity gained after having spent eight years on its lees. Baked apple tart, pastry, spice, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes infuse the V.P. with tremendous flavor complexity to fill out its broad, expansive frame. It is a wine of remarkable depth and vinous intensity. In a word: superb. Disgorged: July, 2020.
