    Felettig

Founded by former vineyard worker, Henri Felettig in 1974, this is a domaine that can be expected to take good care of its vines. Domaine Felettig is one of the most underrated, or perhaps unsung names in Burgundy, but the quality has been rapidly improving since 2011 under the stewardship of Gilbert Felettig.

A ripe and brooding nose offers up notes of both red and dark currant, raspberry and a really lovely array of floral elements. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is at once finer and more delineated though notably less concentrated and powerful while the lingering and equally firmly structured finish possesses a different texture as the 100% whole cluster vinification is more obvious. Good stuff here as well in a built-to-age style.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru comprises six barrels this year, plus one amphora that may or may not be blended. The barrel sample has a concentrated bouquet of ravishing red berry fruit mixed with iodine and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a slightly chalky texture and a focused, quite Morey-like finish that lingers. There is something serious about this Les Carrières that suggests it will be for long-term consumption. I also tasted the wine from amphora. This has more sheen on the nose, more polish, perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with black cherry and cassis fruit, the fruit profile similar but the texture silkier than the regular blend. There are touches of pain grillé here, and the wood element is just a little more marked on the finish.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru, which contains 100% whole bunch, has a vivacious bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, a light tobacco scent emerging with time, then pressed rose petals/white flowers. The palate is underpinned by fine tannins, taut and fresh with wonderful salinity and tension on the finish. Superb.

An airy and perfumed nose features notes of spice, red currant and a lovely array of floral nuances. There is excellent vibrancy to the solidly concentrated and unusually powerful medium-bodied flavors that are also quite compact on the lingering and balanced finale. Once again, this is firmly austere and a wine that will need at least half a dozen years of keeping first.

Another of the highlights of the range is the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, cherries, potpourri and a generous application of toasty new oak that will settle down with a bit of bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and nicely concentrated, structured around rich, powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with good length on the finish.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the lively red fruit, the 60% whole bunch lending a soupçon of pepperiness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh with a gentle grip on the graphite-tinged, linear finish. Quite strict! Give this 4-5 years in the cellar.

Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, spices, rose petals and bergamot, with little hint of the tertiary complexity to come, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées is medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, with a deep and concentrated core of fruit that's framed by fine-grained but youthfully chalky tannins, concluding with a precise, energetic finish.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru had a very tardy malo and consequently had been dosed with SO2 just 10 days earlier. Containing 60% whole bunch, this has a generous red cherry and cranberry fruit, pressed flowers and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a crisp line of acidity, grippy in the mouth but with ample freshness on the finish. Excellent, though cut from a different cloth due to its more clayey soils.

Mid purple, not so much distinction coming from the nose. But an impressive depth of fruit behind, really singing. Now the fruit comes out. There is a sumptuous aspect to the fruit halfway to grand cru, though nothing vulgar. Perhaps just a mite chunky. Long finish on pure red fruit. Drink from 2027-2033.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Lavrottes is located in the north of the appellation that was less affected by the frost, so this was cropped at around 25 hectoliters per hectare. It was harvested toward the end of the harvest to gain concentration, includes 30% whole-bunch fruit and was raised in 50% new oak. I like the nose. Gentle at first, then opening its arms and revealing lovely redcurrant, cranberry and crushed strawberry aromas tinged with gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, a fine bead of acidity and good structure—you can feel this gripping the mouth so that the saline finish is almost like a Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a great wine and it should provide longevity if you swing that way.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Lavrottes 1er Cru, which sees 50% new oak, was showing some reduction when I visited the domaine, though there appears to be fine fruit concentration. There is good backbone here, and so this will deserve at least four to six years in bottle. Excellent.

Notes of cherries, raspberries and cassis mingle with hints of forest floor and spices in an incipiently complex bouquet, introducing the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Lavrottes, a medium to full-bodied, rich and structured wine that Felettig observes is always one of the slowest-evolving wines in the cellar. Mineral and youthfully firm, this is promising for the future.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village lost 40% of the production, less than others due to the protection of the church that lies in close proximity. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a clean and pure bouquet with Morello cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of vanilla. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-94)

Sample taken from new and one year old barrel. A rich and even purple, with a dash of new wood. The wood gives an extra dimension which will need to integrate but the essential joyous nature of this hillside vineyard shines through. He thinks he has the best balance here since he started the exchange deal to get these grapes in 2015. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023
