    Château Figeac

    About Château Figeac

Château Figeac dates back to second-century Gallo-Roman origins; Undoubtedly one of the greatest producers and terroirs of the Saint-Émilion appellation, if not the whole of Bordeaux. Mentioned by experts in the same breath as Pavie, Ausone and Cheval Blanc. In 2022, the estate was promoted and awarded a Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status by the Wine Council of St-Émilion.

    Viniculture

Once the largest property in the appellation, many plots were sold over the years to create and enlarge properties like neighbouring Château Cheval Blanc and even Pomerol’s La Conseillante. Figeac has excellent terroir, and after the estate was not awarded Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in 2012, there was renewed determination to put the property back to its rightful place at the top of Saint-émilion. Michel Rolland was hired to consult, and Frederic Faye was appointed to oversee wine-making. The result has been a dramatic upturn in quality and critical acclaim.

Figeac is unusual in Saint-Émilion is situated on gravelly soils. This means a much higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes here. The wine is particularly unique, and buyers may come across a number of allusions to this - "lively and very "Figeac". A higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, as opposed to the Merlot dominant Ausone and Cheval Blanc, Figeac, is a cerebral balance of Left-Bank perfumed mint, cedar and cassis, with the wonderfully lush cashmere texture and fruit of Merlot.

Composed of 36% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot, the 2019 Figeac is deep garnet-purple colored. It needs considerable swirling to coax out its alluring perfume of redcurrant jelly, juicy blackcurrants, and blackberries, with underlying suggestions of candied violets, chocolate box, fragrant earth, and lavender plus a touch of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a mind-blowing array of layers with exceptionally ripe, fine-grained tannins and jaw-dropping tension, leading to a fantastically persistent mineral and floral-tinged finish that makes your heart stop. Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (97)

Lovely aromatics right off the bat, good spice, white peppers, touches of savoury cassis. This 71% mix of the two Cabernets is the highest ever at Figeac, and you feel it in this savoury, rosebud, leafy character to the palate, brilliantly handled and one of the wines of the vintage. This delivers careful balance, sculpted fruits, with a juicy finish. 100% new oak. Romain Jean-Pierre technical director. 38hl/h yield, harvest September 21 to October 19 (with a three week gap between Merlot and Cabernet). 3.65ph. First vintage with the new cellar. 70% production into Figeac, 8% press wine. Tasted twice, excellent quality.

    The Wine Cellar Insider (98-100)

It takes nothing to sense all the intensity, freshness, and depth here. But, more importantly, it is the character. The wine is sensuous, sultry, and lively. The fruits are drenched in cashmere, and velvet that caresses your palate. The levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed. The finish, with its seemingly endless waves of black, blue, and red fruits, with their natural spiciness and purity is off the hook. The seamless finish looks at the 60 second mark, and keeps on going! This is the first vintage for Chateau Figeac as Premier Cru Classe A. With this wine, it is clear they deserve it. The wine blends 35% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon. 8% Press wine. 14% ABV, 3.7 pH. Picking took place September 1 - September 26. This is the earliest harvest in the history of Figeac. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2027-2065. 98-100 Pts

The second wine of Château Figeac, this reflects the top wine's chiseled structure and firm tannins, rich in black currant and damson fruits. The tannins and vanilla flavors give the wine sweetness, echoed by the generous fruits. Drink from 2025.

Blackberry notes on the nose, with some herbal perfume touches too that are so appealing. Smooth and softly textured, with chalky nuances and grippy black cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant leaf aspects giving structure and body. Succulent and juicy with mouthwatering freshness. Great vibrancy and drive with life. Super approachable with the same vein of refinement and charm that Figeac does so well.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (88)

The 2020 Petit-Figeac has a tightly wound, pencil box-tinged bouquet that suggests there is more than the 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It's pretty Left Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a graphite entry that dovetails into a fleshier mid-palate. The 30% new oak is neatly integrated with a healthy dash of black pepper on the finish. Fine.
