Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
If you have the idea that Chambolle Musigny is a “feminine” wine, then Ghislaine Barthod's wines will not disappoint – delicate, pure and perfumed fruit with a core of intense minerality that will age beautifully over the decades. We call Ghislaine Barthod “The Queen of Chambolle”. Her cellar may be humble but her wines are full of splendour and charm.

Wine Advocate (88-90)The 2018 Bourgogne Les Bons Bâtons wafts from the glass with a lovely bouquet of cherries, raspberries and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, it's fleshy and succulent, with powdery tannins and an ample core of mouthwatering fruit. As usual, this derives from a parcel in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, one of the finest locations classified at the regional level. Readers should note that Barthod produces only one Bourgogne, but in some markets it's labelled without the lieu-dit name Les Bons Bâtons. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge Les Bons Batons is the Domaine's largest cuvée from 1.8 hectares of vines. It has a well-defined bouquet with bright red fruit. The medium-bodied palate has vivid red fruit and fine structure with gentle grip on the finish. Village quality here. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 1er Cru, whose 0.38 hectares will be labeled monopole from next year, has a straightforward bouquet that perhaps does not quite deliver the same complexity as the other Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh opening; veins of orange peel and marmalade tincture the dark berry fruit, and a tang of oyster shell emerges toward the precise finish. Very fine. |

Vinous (90-92)Bright red with ruby tones. Crushed black fruits and cherry on the nose, lifted by notes of mint, rock and orange zest. Pliant but firm wine with thickness, clarity and lift. Sappy flavors of medicinal dark cherry, spices and red licorice display excellent balance and depth. A strong performance for this cuvée, from a crop that was off by 50% due to the frost. This reminded me of the superb 1993 bottling. |

Wine Advocate (93-95+)One of the more dramatic, gourmand cuvées in the range is the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, a stunning wine that bursts with aromas of mulberries, raspberries, violets and rose petals, complemented by hints of loamy soil and baking chocolate. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its rich, powdery tannins are entirely cloaked in an ample core of ripe but succulent fruit. I found it hard to resist. |

Vinous (94+)(from a yield of about 28 hectoliters per hectare, according to Ghislaine Barthod): Good bright, full red. Very closed yet delicate nose offers scents of black cherry, licorice, fresh herbs and minerals. Soil-driven, saline and sweet, with powerful minerality accentuating the wine's superb concentration. Wonderfully tactile yet light on its feet, this taut, vibrant wine saturates the entire mouth and stains the front teeth. As with Barthod's other 2010s, the tannins are extremely refined. Barthod notes that the 1999 version of this wine is still young, and she believes that this 2010 will take even longer to reach full maturity. |

Vinous (93)Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. It's hard to believe that this fruit was picked with potential alcohol of just 12.3%. |

Wine Advocate (94-96+)A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Mingling notes of cherries and raspberries with hints of warm spices, orange rind, wild plums and peony, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with huge texture and concentration. Beautifully integrated but tightly wound and youthfully chalky, it will—as usual—demand a little patience. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has an open-knit bouquet of red cherries, kirsch, orange zest and quince aromas, with notes of tobacco and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, touches of meat juices permeating red fruit that merges with darker fruit on the gently gripping, beautifully focused finish. The domaine’s best in show this year? Quite possibly. |
