    Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand-Puy Lacoste is owned by Francoise-Xavier Borie and it’s blessed with stunning grounds. This is one of the most loved and sought after Pauillac estates, because it combines great terroir with affordable wines. This wine consistently outperforms its 5eme Grand Cru Classé classification and it was one of the first Bordeaux Chateau to sell well in Asia. The 55 hectare vineyard of Grand Puy Lacoste is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc was not always planted at the estate. In fact, for much of their history, only two grape varieties were planted, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyard is basically in one large block on the hill of Pauillac. It is a classic style, tannic and concentrated. Not as weighty as some but it has great flavour and purity.

The 2000 Château Grand Puy Lacoste is an exceptional wine from Xavier Borie. It has a brilliant nose of blackberry, crushed stone, graphite and cedar. Putting it to one side for ten to 15 minutes reveals subtle mint-like aromas that whisk you straight to Pauillac. The palate is smooth and silky, cloaking the tannic frame of this GPL so that you barely notice it. But that will stand it in good stead for the long-term, the cornerstone of all great wines from this estate. Then there is that hint of spice on the aftertaste—the show ain't over yet. Served alongside a magnum of Pichon Baron 2000, I would say that at the moment, it does not quite possess the same level of precision. However, it remains a magnificent Pauillac to cherish long-term. Tasted January 2016.

Bright ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of blackcurrant, violet, licorice and currant leaf. Juicy, penetrating and tightly wound, with pure if slightly green cabernet flavors of dark berries, minerals, bitter chocolate and fresh herbs. Finishes long and perfumed, with firm tannins just this side of hardness. Is this a bit too tough for its own good?

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a straight-down-the-line, no frills, pencil lead-infused, black-fruited bouquet with wonderful definition and commendable intensity for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a surprisingly lithe and sensual opening, more red fruit than other vintages of Grand Puy Lacoste with satisfying precision and mineralité on the finish. This is excellent. Tasted February 2017.

Full red-ruby. Brooding aromas of medicinal blackcurrant, plum, menthol, spices and cocoa powder. Lush and fine-grained but youthfully closed, offering moderate sweetness today but noteworthy breadth for the vintage. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and very good length.

The 2009 Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the great vintages from this estate in the modern era. It storms from the glass with scents of blackberry, undergrowth, cedar and mint, retaining the classicism of GPL. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious with a gorgeous, lithe, graphite infused finish that lingers in the mouth. Bon vin. Tasted blind at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting.

The 2012 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has an impressive cassis-tinged bouquet with fresh tobacco and graphite infused black fruit that are very well focused and neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a keen thread of acidity, finely proportioned with a vibrant graphite-infused finish. One of the standout Left Bank wines of the vintage. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

The 2014 Grand-Puy Lacoste has a bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, mint and graphite, well defined and focused. It does not have to try too hard to give so much pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very crisp acidity, beautifully proportioned with a veneer of top quality new oak that will need three or four years to be fully subsumed. The 2015 Grand Puy Lacoste is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Sensual, polished and refined, the 2015 is all class. Silky tannins, perfumed aromatics and beautifully delineated fruit are some of the signatures. These guys often over-deliver in challenging years, and have done so yet again. As you would expect in a vintage that has produced such an excellent Lacoste Borie, this GPL is exceptional, a real success that's juicy and carefully extracted. It has weight and impact, with a Pauillac tannic hold and presence. It's one of my wines of the vintage, and a must buy. The balanced, sculpted, juicy black fruits fully deliver personality and signature style. Harvested 15-29 September, yielding 45hl/ha. 80% new oak.

The fruit profile is typically darker than the Lacoste but it is still vibrant, fresh and wonderfully concentrated. The palate is beautifully linear and balanced with excellent focus, mineral grain and a bit of muscle. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. The highest alcohol levels ever at 14% but you’d never know it and it’s still not a patch on some of the big bruisers this year. As it sits in the glass it becomes even more forward and clear with lively red currant on top of the deeper black berry.

The 2019 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits notions of minty cassis, plums, loamy soil, burning embers and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety palate that’s deep and concentrated, its generous core of lively fruit concealing an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin. Consisting of fully 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is another true classic from the Borie family.
