    Henri Boillot

The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is beautiful, mingling notions of red plums and raspberries with hints of rose petals, orange rind and warm spices, framed by a deft application of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it has lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Fine-boned and vibrant, this has turned out very well indeed.

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is serious and structured, enforcing a change of pace after the series of Puligny-Montrachet grands crus. Mingling notes of pear and citrus oil with hints of toasted bread, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and chalky, with palpable structuring dry extract and tangy balancing acids.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

The first Boillot vintage of Clos Richemont, with planting from the 1970s on a very white limestone soil: sternly mineral, almost Puligny in style, suggests Guillaume. Lighter pale primrose, a very light toastiness on the nose. Striking energy at the back, a little bit of salinity, real energy too and very good length. Quite different from the other 1er crus, but offering the usual Boillot clarity and precision. A brilliant finish.

The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières has turned out nicely, mingling scents of honeyed pears, mandarin orange, paraffin wax, smoke and toasted nuts in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it's bright and chalky, with a long, penetrating finish.

    Decanter (94)

Poruzots occupies a prime mid-slope location, sandwiched between Genevrières and Les Gouttes d’Or, with an exposition east and a bit north, which can only have helped in 2019. The result shows extremely lively citrus aromas, with almost tropical, exotic, up front tones and a bit of spice from the 50% new oak used for the maturation. The wine has breadth and substance, but there is plenty of fresh acidity that carries it to a long, persistent finish.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

Gorgeous full yellow with lots of green reflections. A tiny bit of toast on the nose, which is one of the more reserved bouquets on show today, but suggests potential. Fabulous in the mouth here, retaining discretion, clinging to its toast, really very good all the way through and exceptionally long with a growth of minerals through the flesh.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles exhibits aromas of orange oil, toasted nuts, pear and white flowers, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit and bright girdling acids, it concludes with a precise, mouthwatering finish.

One of my favorite wines in the cellar is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a lovely cuvée that wafts from the glass with notes of plums, rose petals, sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, it's sapid and concentrated, with refined tannins and a long, saline finish.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Volnay Chevrets 1er Cru has a more backward nose compared to the Fremiets, darker fruit with a pastille-like quality. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity with that pastille leitmotif returning on the elegant and pure finish. This Volnay is refined and approachable, but I suspect it has the legs to give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure.
