    Hubert Lignier

    About Hubert Lignier

Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.

It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87)

Bottled three weeks ago. 13.25% alcohol. Bright mid-purple. Good energy on the nose, more discretion than some, though with a plump sucrosity on the palate. Sending different signals between the discretion and the eventual sucrosity, but these should harmonise.! Excellent length. Tasted: November 2021

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

The holding is in the angle at the northern end of the vineyard, where Laurent has had a nice little wall in dry stone built. Dark black colour with light purple rim. As ever, this is much more Morey than Chambolle. Rich deep dark fruit with its typical savoury edge, dark raspberry notes, a little plum, flavours which reach far to the back of the palate. Succulent and savoury together and very persistent. 13.25% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chabiots (négoce) wafts from the glass with aromas of peonies, orange oil, sweet red berries and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and charming, it's lively and precise, concluding with a penetrating finish.

(from purchased fruit from the lieux-dits Les Drazey and Les Gamaires; Lignier does the vineyard work): Bright medium red. Urgent aromas of cranberry and fresh strawberry accented by crushed stone. Juicy, spicy and pure, conveying a touch of rocky minerality and good minty lift to its red berry flavors. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins. I might have identified this very firm village wine blind as a 2014.

Produced from purchased fruit and vinified with one-third whole clusters, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes (négoce) bursts with aromas of raspberries, berries, woodsmoke and sweet soil tones. It's medium to full-bodied, succulent and fine-boned, with a delicate core of fruit framed by powdery tannins.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from two terrors and is an acquisition of fruit. The nose is quite backward at first and does not quite slip into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry and strawberry entry, fine acidity, quite fleshy as you would hope from a Chambolle with the 30% whole bunch imparting a welcome spiciness on the finish. Very fine.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side. It has a very attractive bouquet of black cherries, wild strawberry, cola and touches of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, the 30% whole bunch lending a subtle earthiness on the midpalate, although I would like a little more substance to show on the finish. Enjoy this over the next 15 years.

The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is matured in 30% new oak with up to 30% whole cluster fruit, two-thirds from Montluisants and one-third Fremiers. It has an intoxicating bouquet that is extraordinarily complex: shimmering red berry fruit, blood orange, incense and a touch of crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, wonderful depth and harmony, laser-like focus toward the finish that lingers in the mouth. Stunning mineralité here—the tongue feels as if it licked limestone 30 second after the wine has disappeared. If there is a better Clos de la Roche then I have not tasted it (yet).

The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from the two terroirs, the majority from Mont Luisants and one-third from Fremières. The vines were planted in the Sixties and the late Fifties respectively. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, briary and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, concentrated as you would expect since it was cropped at around 25hl/ha with wonderful minerality on the finish. Outstanding.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière, from purchased grapes, has an intense, granitic bouquet that is quite serious and austere, but you cannot deny the delineation here. The palate is marked by dark berry fruit, loganberry and bilberry, well judged acidity and a silky smooth finish that embraces the 25% new oak. This is a very seductive Gevrey.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière comes from purchased grapes, although Laurent Lignier controls the vineyard that is in its first year of conversion to biodynamie. It has a perfumed and floral bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit, tensile from the beginning with fine tannin and a pointed sorbet-fresh finish. This is very fine and may well eclipse the excellent 2014 la Perrière.

Lignier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, sweet soil tones, licorice, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity. This will require patience.
