    Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

    About Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was founded in 1926 with the union of Jean Confuron of Vosne and Anne-Marie Bouchard of Premeaux. In 1980, the estate was split between the couple’s children, Christian and Jean-Jacques. Jean-Jacques had the good fortune of marrying Andrée Noëllat, one of the scions of the famed Noëllat family whose estate was subsequently acquired by Domaine Leroy, which explains why it is a common occurrence to find Confuron, Leroy, and Hudelot-Noëllat parcels side by side in several of the appellations. Today, the estate is led by Jean-Jacque’s daughter, Sophie Meunier-Confuron and her husband Alain Meunier.

Good full red. Wild, musky, slightly reduced aromas of dark berries, leather and meat. Very round and seamless, with strong notes of oaky torrefaction. Shows less fruit vibrancy than the Beaux Monts and comes across as more aggressive--and decadent--on the back end. Plenty of power and palate-saturating tannins here.

The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots, matured in 50% new oak, has a similar bouquet to the les Fleurières, but here the fruit is one of Confuron’s few that nudges more toward the red side of the fruit spectrum. The palate is silky smooth on the entry with a fine line of acidity. There is ample freshness here, a buxom Vosne endowed with sensuality and purity on the finish.

Similar deep color. More rustic, deeper-pitched aromas of black fruits, saddle leather, duck sauce and smoky oak. Solidly built and chewy in the mouth; typical Nuits. Less fat and delineated, perhaps owing to lower acidity. But brooding, very concentrated and long on the palate. Seems clearly deeper than the '95 from these vines.

    Vinous (89-92)

Deep, saturated red with ruby highlights. More mineral-driven and less dominated by oak than the Boudots, with aromas of black fruits, spices, violet and pepper. Sweet in the mouth but with more energy and lift than the last few samples. Intensely flavored, youthful wine in a distinctly invigorating style. The rising palate-coating finish is broad, concentrated and long. These vines were picked last, notes Meunier, adding that they benefit from their position in the cooler combe above Les Cailles.

(Alain Meunier bottled this in late April, a bit after most of his other 2010s, as he thought the tannins called for a longer elevage): Good medium red. Reduced aromas of smoked meat, animal fur and minerals. Good sweet red fruits here, with harmonious acidity framing the silky middle palate. This very ripe but nicely balanced wine finishes with late notes of iron, coffee and cocoa and tannins that are firm but not hard.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

Destemmed after the drought so as not to stress further. Assembled in tank. Fine mid purple. Another really attractive perfumed nose, they do seem to have hit the picking dates just right at J-J Confuron this year. Much more red than black fruit, extremely juicy, enough generosity here, some tannins to finish, but the fruit is the clear winner. Tasted: December 2021

This is a stunning wine. This dark ruby colored beauty displays a beguiling nose of roses, violets, perfume, and candied red fruits that is followed by a super-ripe (sur-maturite!), unbelievably classy, and splendidly balanced character. Its mouth-coating, powerful (yet elegant), rich, and plump flavor profile is jam-packed with red and black fruits, flowers, and silky tannins that persist throughout its defined and amazingly long finish. This magnificent wine is a testimony to Meunier's dedication, work-ethic, and huge talent. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012+. Bravo!

Saturated, dark red-ruby color. Soil-driven aromas of dark cherry, mocha, cocoa powder and pungent minerality. Like liquid silk in the mouth, with great finesse and perfume to its ineffable raspberry and mineral flavors. Wonderfully concentrated, classy wine with an utterly seamless texture. This saturates every millimeter of the mouth. The suave, perfumed finishing flavors go on and on yet remain virtually weightless. A great wine: Meunier considers it the best he has made since 1993.

Medium red. Wild, musky aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha and coffee. Thick and dense but shapely, with good energy to the dark fruit, mineral and bitter chocolate flavors. At once large-scaled and confectionery for young RSV, this wine really calls for six to eight years of cellaring.

This is also notably floral in character with a panoply of spice elements that add both depth and breadth to the cool cherry, raspberry and red currant aromas. As was the case with the Beaux Monts there is a spicy inner mouth perfume to the delicious and classy middle weight flavors that are shaped by sophisticated and very fine tannins, all wrapped in a mouth coating, focused and seriously persistent finish. A classic RSV.

The crown jewel is the 2012 Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru that comes from the 0.50-hectare slither planted in 1922. It already boasts an enticing bouquet laden with luscious dark cherry and creme de cassis fruit, stupendous mineralite and exotic touches of blood orange and marmalade. The palate is silky smooth with razor-sharp tannins, once again superb mineralite and a sleek, sensual, quite piercing sorbet-fresh finish that lingers in the mouth much longer than the Clos de Vougeot. This is a sophisticated, modern take on the grand cru, one with panache and oozing class.

    Vinous (96)

The 2016 Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet. The fruit is darker than its peers: blackberry, boysenberry, hints of blueberry and crushed violet petals. This is quintessential Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly judged acidity. This is endowed with disarming structure and poise, fanning out beautifully towards the finish. A fabulous wine but it deserves a decade in the cellar. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Decanter (96)

Planted way back in 1926, this 0.5ha parcel is always the most complex wine at the domaine. Violet and aniseed scents segue into a palate that's smooth, glossy and textured with bramble and black cherry fruit, some chalky undertones, stylish oak and subtle reduction. Supple, refined winemaking with appealing underlying precision and freshness. One of the best examples of the Grand Cru in 2018.
