Vinous (91-93)(the Bouleys own a parcel of 50-to-55-year-old vines in the windy northern part of the cru that mostly avoided the frost in 2016; almost entirely destemmed): Full, deep red. Aromas of dark cherry and black raspberry are complemented by a musky oak element. Concentrated, rich and sweet, displaying an old-vines density to its flavors of cherry and saline minerality. This nuanced wine seems a bit less austere than usual but is nonetheless a more powerful style than the Carelles. Finishes with ripe tannins, subtle persistence and noteworthy grip. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch fruit. It has a clean and precise bouquet, quite tight at the moment with touches of chalk filtered through the red fruit. The palate is crisp and taut with fine tannin, impressive mineralité. Not a powerful Clos des Chênes but certainly precise and lightly spiced on the finish. Good potential, but this will need patience. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2017 Volnay Village offers pure raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents on the nose. The palate is crunchy and lively on the entry, with fine grip, quite Pommard-like in style thanks to the structured, slightly tertiary finish with hints of brine on the aftertaste. Fine. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2017 Volnay Clos de la Caves includes 50% whole bunches that makes a difference on the nose offering tobacco and undergrowth aromas, a touch of black tea that complement the brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a brisk line of acidity, nothing powerful or intense but there is fine precision on the understated finish. Drink over the next decade. |
