Château Lafon-Rochet

Château Lafon-Rochet

Château Lafon-Rochet has made great strides in the last decade in improving the style of their wine to one which strives for elegance, charm and finesse. The 4eme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe estate was first purchased by the Tesseron family in 1959 and is currently under the management of Basile Tesseron.

Owner Basile Tésseron is a monumental figure in his native region, having taken over management of Lafon-Rochet from his father in 2007. The current president of the St-Éstephe ODG since 2019, Tésseron has been building a dream team at Château Lafon-Rochet in recent years. He employs superstar consultant Eric Boissenot, who consults for First Growth Chateaux Lafite, Latour, Mouton and Margaux, and he was the first to lure ex-Pétrus winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet over to the Left Bank.

Lafon-Rochet 2006 (12x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (90)

(55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot) Good ruby-red. Black fruits, licorice, violet and a leafy note on the nose. Juicy and moderately dense, with good stuffing and life. The slight herbaceousness carries through onto the palate, but there's nothing meager or skinny about this wine. Seems denser than the 2004, and finishes with dusty but well-buffered tannins. A good showing.

Lafon-Rochet 2017 (12x75cl)

Decanter (93)

This is a lovely St-Estèphe this year, firm and bright with bristling fruit right out of the gate - hugely unusual to see that this year. This is one of my favourites, and is totally charming with its cassis and damson fruit, but it's the juice and friendly tension that sets it apart. Silky and enjoyable. Buy.
