Le Chiuse
About Le Chiuse
Originally part of what was, and perhaps still is, the single most famous and important estate in Montalcino, Le Chiuse is a child of Biondi-Santi itself. Time, marriages and inheritance laws have occasionally conspired to see mighty estates give life to exciting off-shoots, and it was in 1993 that current owner Simonetta Valiani chose to announce her inherited parcel of land onto the fine wine scene to a rapturous reception.
The great-granddaughter of Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, it is her son Lorenzo Magnelli who heads the winemaking team at this glorious property. Young, ambitious and driven, his wines have risen quickly as a famous Tuscan house.
There is undeniably change in the air blowing through the rolling hills of Montalcino, but it is a most welcome refreshing breeze as opposed to an alteration of the soul of its wines. Austere and often more rustic than many would perhaps prefer, there is more polish and subtle generosity to these Tuscan giants in recent years. Similarities have been drawn between the famed “Barolo Boys” movement in Piedmont, which followed many of the same paths as Brunello is currently – young, ambitious winemakers dedicating themselves to their craft to further the quality and renown of Brunello di Montalcino. At the very forefront of this wave is Le Chiuse.
