Excellent deep red. Black raspberry, minerals and smoky oak on the nose: the dark side of Chambolle, particularly in comparison to the redder-fruit '95. Minerally and firm, with excellent density for a village wine but limited complexity. Finishes firm, ripe and persistent.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremieres is rich, seductive and incredibly primary, with little in the way of aromatic expressiveness. This is the first wine of these 2009s that is closed in on itself. With time in the glass hints of red cherries and flowers begin to emerge, yet this remains an implosive wine in need of considerable cellaring. The depth of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins are impossible to miss, but this multi-dimensional wine begs for patience.

(around 13.5% natural alcohol) Good deep red. Captivating aromas of red berries, minerals, earth, smoke and underbrush. Large-scaled, rich and full, and yet almost magically light on its feet for a wine with so much volume thanks to its purity and underlying minerality. Really mounts on the back end, with the big, broad, palate-saturating tannins coming late. This will go truffley with bottle aging.

The sheer density of fruit here is nothing short of remarkable and the complexity is equally amazing and words cannot really do justice to the breadth of aromas though it is worth noting that there is veritable profusion of the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes along with notes of plum-like liqueur, earth and a smoky hint. This is a huge and powerful wine with overtly muscular flavors that ooze both minerality and tannin-buffering extract before culminating in a lavish finish of spectacular length. In my view, this is the finest Leroy Renardes since the unbelievable 1999.

As is always the case, the Corton-Renardes is up first. A huge, explosive wine, the 2015 exudes strength, power and muscle. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black fruit. Hints of smoke, iron and incense add layers of nuance and overall complexity. Even so, the natural rusticity of Corton-Renardes comes through loud and clear.

Bright ruby-red. Lovely pure aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry, minerals and flowers. Rich and layered but at the same time juicy, precise and penetrating, with enticing dark fruit and mineral flavors and a Vosne-like suppleness of texture. Finishes with superb, perfumed length, with sweet, fine tannins and vibrant, harmonious acidity. A great vintage for this cuvee

Notes of cassis flowers, violets, earth and plenty of spice leads to medium weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel as the tannins are extremely fine-grained. There is good punch and delineation to the chiseled, intense and moderately austere finish that is not only exceptionally persistent but impeccably well-balanced. In sum, this is textbook Vignerondes with its refined yet tautly muscular palate impression.

The 2014 Romanée St. Vivant is a bit reduced today, but it possesses striking depth and density. This is an especially dark, dense RSV, and yet there is plenty of underlying grip. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2014 does not appear like it will drink at its best anytime soon. A finish endowed with substantial tannin and high acidity only reinforces that impression.

Full ruby-red. Reticent but vibrant nose dominated by black raspberry and spices. Bright, spicy and pure; not as thick as the Brulees but more sharply defined. A serious, deep wine with terrific underlying structure and grip. Very fresh and unevolved. Like the Nuits Boudots, this seems close in quality to its 1998 counterpart. Leroy owns a relatively large 2.62-hectare chunk of this excellent premier cru.

    Vinous (96)

Dark red. Roasted aromas of black and red fruits, minerals and cocoa powder. Then almost magically vibrant and detailed for such a ripe wine, with superb inner-mouth energy and suave texture. Extremely fine-grained but solidly structured wine, finishing with noble tannins, palate-coating flavor and great clarity. Lalou Bize considers this classier than the 1999 version.

The 2009 Romanee St. Vivant flows with layers of silky red berries, flowers and spices. It is totally sensual and inviting from start to finish. The tannins are barely perceptible given sweetness, perfume and sheer radiance of the fruit. This is dazzling juice.

    Vinous (96)

The 2014 Romanée St. Vivant is a bit reduced today, but it possesses striking depth and density. This is an especially dark, dense RSV, and yet there is plenty of underlying grip. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2014 does not appear like it will drink at its best anytime soon. A finish endowed with substantial tannin and high acidity only reinforces that impression.

    Vinous (93+)

Red-ruby. Raspberry, dark chocolate and minerals, with a slightly grilled quality; like a more intense, urgent version of the Genaivrieres. Very ripe but closed in the mouth, with a superb sappy sweetness and a hint of marzipan. Offers impressive fat and texture, with harmonious framing acidity. Finishes very long, with firm but suave tannins and lingering notes of spices and minerals.

Bright red. Aromas of red berries, violet, smoke, truffle and earth. Sweet and lush in the mouth; very rich but less expressive today than on the nose. This will age more on its strong but even tannins than on its acids. Doesn't offer quite the snap of the Beaux-Monts though.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is a wine of raw, unbridled power. Dense and also deeply expressive, but very much in need of time to come together, the Brulées is super-impressive. Smoke, scorched earth and driven red-toned notes give the 2014 its distinctively pungent, bold personality.

    Vinous (91-94)

Full ruby-red. Reticent but vibrant nose dominated by black raspberry and spices. Bright, spicy and pure; not as thick as the Brulees but more sharply defined. A serious, deep wine with terrific underlying structure and grip. Very fresh and unevolved. Like the Nuits Boudots, this seems close in quality to its 1998 counterpart. Leroy owns a relatively large 2.62-hectare chunk of this excellent premier cru.
