Lucien Le Moine
About Lucien Le Moine
Founded in 1999 by Mounir and Rotem Saouma, Lucien Le Moine is an expression of the Burgundian drive to lovingly craft only the very best wines from the very best terroirs, regardless of any external factors. These are wines of truly relentless excellence.
The concerted aim of this house is to produce no more than 100 barrels of 1er and Grand Cru wine each vintage, varying from year to year as Mounir samples each vineyard before deciding which meet his lofty standards. Often only securing a single barrel per vineyard, their 100 barrel release in 2017, for example, covered 68 different wines.
The Winemaking
Lucien Le Moine has no running contracts with growers (although they will often source grapes repeatedly from the best), and they have no prerequisites with regards to how the vines were managed. Fascinatingly, this producer is not a winemaker, as such, as they purchase wines after fermentation. Instead, the art for which Mounir and Rotem Saouma have become so revered is the élevage - the process of ageing, filtration, racking etc. in their facility in Beaune.
Given their focus on post-fermentation processes, they work very closely with one specific barrel supplier, who sources the very finest wood from the great forests of France and wider Europe. Such is their care and determination, that each individual barrel is composed and toasted slightly differently to match and season each specific wine - attention to detail and artisanal craft reaches its apogee at Lucien Le Moine.

Vinous (90-92)Dark red-ruby. Good mineral lift to the aromas of red berries, tobacco and cardamom. Bright, fine-grained wine with moderate depth and sweetness but lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its raspberry and stone flavors. Still a bit compressed but this may be gaining in richness. The firmly tannic finish offers good persistence. |

Burghound (91-94)A notably fresher nose offers up notes of various red berries along with a plentitude of floral nuances. There is also better energy on the palate of the medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the saline and lingering if again mildly rustic finish. With that said, this is much better-balanced. |

Vinous (92)Deep, bright red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, minerals, woodsmoke, cured meat and underbrush. Sweet, spicy and vibrant, with an enticing savory soil perfume contributing to an impression of extract. The palate-staining finish is broad and classically dry, offering excellent structure and lift. |

Burghound (91-93)A ripe yet cool nose reflects notes of black raspberry, poached plum and a lovely violet top note. There is very good volume to the caressing yet muscular medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length and even better depth. This should be excellent in time. |

Vinous (88-89)Palish red. Soil-driven aromas of mocha, smoked meat, pepper and underbrush. Quit pliant and sweet in the mouth, but showing only moderate clarity and depth. A flavor of black cherry is joined by spices and a touch of greenness on the back end. I wanted more lift. |

Vinous (90-92)Medium red. Sweet, wild nose offers scents of red licorice, iron, herbs and flowers, plus a faintly vegetal quality that adds interest. Supple, silky and exotic in the mouth, displaying a fine-grained texture to the exuberant flavors of medicinal cherry, iron and smoke. Finishes with ripe tannins and excellent saline persistence. Very Morey. |

Vinous (92-94)(destemmed): Bright, full ruby. Deep, almost liqueur-like aromas of cassis and black cherry; there's something old school about this. Hugely concentrated and mouthfilling, with its very ripe flavors of cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate and violet complicated by saline minerality. Finishes dense, saline, floral and very long, with big but utterly smooth tannins that reach the incisors. This is a major mouthful of wine already but it will need time to lose some baby fat. With its slightly high-toned character and impression of fat, this wine struck me as rather 2015-like. |

Burghound (92-94)Notably ripe yet nicely fresh and even cool aromas of poached plum and dark berry fruit coulis are trimmed in hints of earth and the sauvage. The palate impression of the big-bodied and powerful flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is actually nicely refined if dense whereas the wonderfully persistent finish is robust, muscular and borderline rustic, as well as exceptionally firm. Once again, I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least a decade and this beauty should repay almost two. |

Vinous (89-91)Moderately saturated medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, coffee and pepper. Red berry and spice flavors are complemented by subtle earthy nuances, with harmonious acidity giving the wine a juicy quality. Finishes with lovely lift and sneaky thrust. |

Wine Advocate (92)The 2011 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a tight blackberry, bay leaf and seaweed bouquet. The palate is typically tannic and brusque on the entry with angular tannins, fine acidity and a strong saline finish. There is a hint of bitter chocolate on the aftertaste, perhaps from a touch of wood that needs time to be absorbed, therefore I suggest affording this Pommard several years in bottle – there is a lot of energy in this wine. Drink 2016-2030. |

Burghound (92-94)A top note of menthol is present on the earthy and floral aromas of red currant, dark pinot and leather. The slightly finer and more voluminous flavors don't offer the same minerality though there is notably better depth on the compact, serious and built-to-age finish. This classy and suave effort is extremely promising if you're prepared to wait. |

Wine Advocate (93-94)The 2 barrels of Le Moine 2007 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots lead with high-toned cassis and distilled sloe berry aromas, along with brown spices and musky peony, narcissus, and animal scents. In the mouth this is as exotic if not downright erotic a set of flavors as the nose intimates, allied to a primary juiciness of tart-edged black fruits and a refinement of tannins that lead to an invigorating, intriguing, and positively refreshing finish. This should make for a wild and exciting ride over the next ten or a dozen years. |

Vinous (91-93)Bright ruby. Slightly compact aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and dark chocolate. Very ripe on the palate but with terrific inner-mouth tension, showing as much red fruits as black and therefore a bit less heavy than usual for this cru, which Mounir Saouma says is normally a bit too Côte-Rôtie-like for his taste. The fine-grained but firm tannins spread out horizontally and build, with late notes of cocoa powder and violet emerging. Good verve here. |

Burghound (90-92)Here the nose is sufficiently reduced to mask the underlying fruit. Otherwise there is good vibrancy to the delicate, pure and lacy middle weight flavors that flash a touch of youthful austerity on the lingering finish. This lacks a bit of depth at present, but more should develop if given a few years. |

Burghound (90-92)Here too the reduction is dense enough to hide the fruit. Otherwise, there is a caressing but punchy mouthfeel to the detailed and refined middle weight flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finale. This is very Petits Vougeot in character with its elegant and understated style. |
